Kundapur, Oct 21: In connection with the incident in which more than 25 cattle were illegally and inhumanly being transported in a good tempo on October 17, main accused, Moideen Beary alias Monu (42), resident of
Gandhinagar, Gulvady in the taluk, was arrested by a team led by the police sub-inspector of rural station here, Sridhar Naik, and his team of constables, on the evening of Friday October 20.
In the said incident, after the police gave the vehicle a hot chase, the vehicle was driven haphazardly, seriously injuring one of the policemen, Prashanth Naganna. 11 of the cattle were found dead on account of the way they were bundled into the van, and several were injured. At the end of the police chase which went on from 3 am on October 17 to 5.45 am, the cattle transporters had abandoned the van at Mavinakatte near Kandlur before fleeing.
The police said that the main accused in the case had absconded after the incident. He had repeatedly changed the sim of his cellphone to hoodwink the police. But the police had the last laugh at the end. It is said that during his questioning, Monu gave hint that another accused was also involved with the operation. Investigation is on.
A special police team had been formed to investigate this case. The team, which doggedly followed the case, succeeded in making the said arrest. The operation was conducted under the leadership of police circle inspector here, Manjappa, and guidance of deputy superintendent of police, Praveen Nayak, and direction of Udupi district superintendent of police, Dr Sanjeev Patil.
