Mangaluru, Oct 20: In a heroic effort, the driver of a city bus saved the lives of passengers after the bus' brakes failed near St Aloysius College in the city on Friday, October 20.

The bus, route number 14 A, which plies between Hampankatta and Bondel was driven by driver Srikanth.

Srikanth safely negotiated the bus from Light House Hill Road after he realised that the bus’s brakes had given way. The bus came to a halt at Balmatta bus stop.

    Indeed it is the presence of mind and alertness on the part of Mr. Shrikant which saved the lives of the passengers.

    Driver Srikant should be suitably rewarded. However it is expedient that all buses are are routinely serviced and inspected.

    Yesterday it was a Volvo bus plying from Bhatkal to Mangalore, the engine which caught fire and quickly doused off saving 15 precious lives. Today it was the turn of Route No. 14A whose brakes failed to activate. A slight coincidence. .. 2 drivers both of whom applied their presence of mind and saved what would have been a major catastrophe. Result...lack of periodical/regular maintenance and overhaul taken for granted thus compromising with the safety of passengers. This is primarily due to a lackadaisical "carefree attitude" adopted by the Management of the concerned Transport Department. It is a matter of urgency that these issues need to be resolved on a war footing. Fortunately this only pertains to one mode of transport UNLIKE a metropolitan city like Bombay where there exists multiple transport modes which are very complex but handled meticulously and in a professional manner.

    While appreciating the presence of mind of the driver ...The BRAKE FAIL theory sounds like a old filmy dialog. How brake fails is still a mystery ..Does the Bus maintain a log of previous done ? Were the brakes checked as part of checklist of service done ? or was the driver was reckless in his driving..maybe a hot chick was sitting besides him and he wanted to show his herogiri by overspeeding needs to be investigated.
    This is what I term as the great callous attitude of Indians ..Exactly "Chaltha hai attitude" .Either Modi ,Rahul or any other PM cannot do anything about this callous attitude which has majorly contributed to our underdevelopment of India.

    Hats off to this driver....... Even my dad works in this same company bus (PTC) he too faced with same issue a month back near agnes however he managed to stop the bus but 1 activa and a car got slightly damaged, the issue is with the manager of this PTC ltd their buses has got no hand brakes. When my dad asked him to install the hand brakes the manager shouted at him saying "you no need of teaching me, and there is no need of hand brakes and we will not install it anymore you mind your own business" a strict action must be taken against him. And i request the owner to install hand break in all their buses.

    All pvt buses in Mangluru r junk category buses, run rashly by uncivilized staff, which r not fit for humans especially the children n sr citizens! Authorities should better phase out more than 10 yr old buses to avoid a big tragedy in the future!

    What if you switch off the engine? Bus doesn't stop after some distance?

    @ sir_elder,Karkala if you switch off the engine brake system will fail....brake works on vacuum in bus..

    Point here is brakes already not functional.
    So if you turn off engine, then power transmission stops. Then gears will locks the power transmission unless it is downward slope. Is it correct?

    From SAC towards Jyothi junction is a sloped road and the junction itself has unending heavy traffic. To have reached Balmatta is itself a herculean task. Lucky are the passengers and indeed a good work by the driver.

    The RTO must impose compulsory periodical tests on public transport vehicles and ensure surprise checking. Drivers must be given training in controlling situations such as this before they are appointed to drive such buses.

    Most of the city buses are with out maintainece. They run with old junk bus for collection only. Some are out dated buses . RTO must check regularly.

    Thank God there were no injuries and casualties. Driver should be recognized for his act. But at the same time he should be blamed too as he needs to check brake fluid every morning before he begins for the day.
    Nevertheless a accident averted. Thank God.
