Deoband issues fatwa, bars Muslim women from posting pics on social media

Deoband (UP), Oct 19 (DHNS): The Darul Uloom Deoband in Uttar Pradesh issued a bizarre fatwa on Thursday, banning Muslim women from posting pictures on social media.

The Deoband is said to have announced that Muslim women should not post their pictures on Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter.

Darul Ifta, the fatwa-issuing authority of the seminary, termed all these activities as "un-Islamic" and asked Muslim women to refrain from them.

The fatwa came in response to a query by a Muslim man asking if his wife can post and upload her pictures on social media handles.

Darul Iftaa had issued another fatwa a few days ago that banned women from plucking, trimming, shaping their eyebrows and cutting hair.

The Darul Uloom is the largest seminary in India.

Arey baapre kya illogical fatwa hai .... We are at 21st century, here girls are reaching moon & stars and we are issuing such lame things. I feel then you issue the same thing to mens too... My question is WHY ONLY GIRLS ??? I know the even if the girls wanted to their grievance will be unheard.... Bhai log Abhi please unka education per fatwa muth lagao....

There were many unwanted practices in Hindu religion too like child marriage, dowry system, sati, hair shaving for widows, dalit system and I am sad that some system like dowry and child marriage is still going on in rural areas. But I am happy that it has been abolished through government rules...

Yes Guys I agree that we need to swim along with flow of the river but really needs an out of the box thinking to swim against the flow. Why are non-Muslims commenting here . Fatwa issued by Muslims and for Muslims and why cannot other religion people keep quiet and let Muslims decide their fate? We have different laws for different religion in our country and until and unless command civil code is implemented others religion people have right to comment anything on fatwa.

Legally ,are they the authority to issue fatwa?
Or can any mullah issue fatwa?
What if a shia gives a fatwa which is opposing to a fatwa given by a Sunni mullah?
    Curious.

The social media in the new digital era has both pro and cons. It's content can be useful as well as misused. Most of the cases it does more damage before it is withdrawn or law enforcement take action.
We as the nation seen fake news circulated which led to the communal violence in Muzaffarnagar. It is an open threat everyday for which anyone can be a victim.
Now question of Deoband fatwa is justified or not, I believe no father, husband or brother will like her loved ones to post indecent pictures or chat which is unacceptable.
When nation seen skilful army of 'anti Romeo' and 'moral police' had taken to ensure love free India, Deoband fatwa is just like father caution to her daughter.
In this world of 'Digital India' anyone's picture can be photoshopped or morphed to be misused in thriving business of explicit print media or videos'.
Do anyone of our families like knowingly like her daughter or sister to be victim?

Those who are commenting here should understand the basic fact that the rules in Islam are different from other religions. For those who want to strictly follow all the rules of the religion it is not difficult. Those who find it difficult don't follow. It is their own life and they can decide if they want to follow the religion strictly or not.

Fatwa is an opinion of religious heads on issues which are not clear in Quran or Hadees, on those issues which are not clear in Quran or Hadees. The issues which were not there during the time of our Prophet ( like this social media and sharing your pictures. )

Fatwa is given by Muftis who thoroughly study the religion and are qualified to give fatwas. They give their fatwas on any topic after a deep research into the topic and often based on the opinion of our Prophet or his companions on situations which is similar to this.

Issuing fatwa does not mean that people will be punished by the community or religious leader for not adhering to it. It is only a guidance and it is upto the people whether they want to follow the religion strictly or not.

Mr. Shanawaz, Being a Muslim and not knowing what is Fatwa is being too far behind in deen. You should be known that a Fatwa is issued when any Muslim arrives with an issue to which he/she need answers to their problem based on Quran and Hadith principles and approaches Religious body and the answer or solution given in written is defined aa Fatwa. So now its upto that person whether he will obey it or not obey. It's best with your modern thoughts don't try to devalue deen and any deeni schools.

Regardimg your advise to Religious body to bring in reforms of worldy education in women and women empowerment, you should be well aware that it is not any Religious bodies concern or duty to think of worldly education to fellow Muslims. Their duty is only towards improving deeni knowledge and guiding to lead a life following Quran and Hadith.

Instead of asking them it would be better you ask yourself how much you have contributed for women empowerment and also to bring humamity to true path to succeed in both worlds. It's not enough that one be punctual in prayers and give their kids good education of both Deeni and worldy education. Our contribution should more towards Ummah not just remain to only self family.

Why any religion should dictate term as what should be worn, what should be eaten by its followers etc? All Holy Books were written in times when world's order was totally different. Those who wrote the Holy Books, the Messengers, the Prophets, the Messiah's everyone was child of those times and hence wrote what was practical those days. But if someone says we should eat, drink and do something as per a 2000-year-old practice, we can but just laugh at the slavish attitude of the followers. Any religion that does not adapt to times and changing world order, is a bane to mankind and it can only cause misery to its followers and to the entire society. We believe God has created every man and woman in His own image and likeness. Then why modesty, character etc are only applied to women while men can get away with anything? While living in a Democratic country, the priority is to follow the Constitution and not the Holy Books. Morality is one's choice and no one can and should force it on other. Problem with this particular religion that they it suppresses the right to question and relies running the religion on fear. The religious mafia of this religion has authenticated every crime against humanity as religious duty and those who are dazed with the high doses of this Religionolics fails to see that our lasting identity is being Human and not being Hind, Muslim, Christian or Sikh. Try giving the reigns in the hands of women you patriarchs and you will then know how hollow are your religious claims.

Right, Santosh. All religions were the product of men's dominance in the "enlightened" era where women were given no place at all. Believe me, in spite of all that and the contradictions within the holy books and their predominant gender bias, women are far more devoted to their gods than modern men who give lipservice to their faith. It was always that way, lest they lose grip on power. If there was any notion of apostasy in the past the religious fatwa even now (in the old dark days, Inquisition in Goa and Spain) brought both men and women in line.

There was a time, frequent wars would break out between Kingdoms. Men would die in wars. Women's left with no men.
Children were needed. Men capable of looking after, were allowed to marry more women to fulfill the needs of the society.
Circumstances demanded changes, otherwise God's plan was from the beginning Adam and Eve for one man one Woman. Man lead the family, women nourished the family with love. There was no descrimination. Re-affirmed the same by son of God himself!

Mr. Rajesh kindly understand what is Hijab first and then you can go on to claim it as idiotic. Since no other Religion observes Hijab practice and are open to any dress code with no restrictions for them it looks idiotic but to those who observe Hijab to them it's not no-sense or idiotic.

This Fatwa is for those who follow Islam so why you are bothered to term it as idiotic? You are open with your ideologies and ask your women's to share pics for whatever claim you wants to make of gender equality. We are totally of our limits and boundaries of shariah and to please the Almighty God by upholding our modesty.

Mr. Jagdish, Instead of me quoting what is in Quran, can I please ask you to know do you really aware of the meaning of word Hijab from Quran and Hadith? For your information kindly refer Chapter An-Nisa (The Women) and Chapter Noor (Light) from Holy Quran, and you can get the verses of Hijab and Modesty for not just women but also men. You can get the Quranic translation copy in any worldly language of your choice to refer.

By the way Muslims follow not just Quran but also Hadith (The saying of Prophet). He/She cannot be a true Muslim if one doesn't follow both Quran and Hadith. The explanation of Quran can be found in detail in Hadith books.
