Bengaluru illegal abattoirs: 23 held for rioting, attacking animal rights activists, cops

Bengaluru, Oct 18 (PTI): Twenty-three people have been arrested on charges of rioting in two incidents when animal right activists visited sites where cows were either allegedly slaughtered or cow meat was sold, police said on Wednesday.

Bengaluru police commissioner T Sunil Kumar told reporters that 10 people were arrested for rioting, attacking a police party and destroying a police vehicle at Chikka Bettahalli near Yelahanka New Town on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when the police personnel accompanied a court commissioners and members of a cow protection NGO – Gau Gyan Foundation – to check illegal abattoirs in the area, he said.

A Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus was damaged in the incident.

"Three cows and a calf were rescued from there and 10 people arrested under cow protection laws for rioting and slaughtering cows," said Kumar.

Narrating the sequence of events in the second incident which occurred on October 14, he said that Nandini, an animal rights activist and her two woman assistants, had lodged a complaint about cows being slaughtered at Talaghattapura near Bengaluru.

Kumar said Nandini too accompanied the police to the spot though she was asked not to go there.

He said police arrested three people for allegedly slaughtering cows under the cow protection law and rescued some cattle.

At the site, Nandini's car had allegedly dashed against an autorickshaw and a garage, which irked residents.

This led to a riotous situation, the official said, adding Nandini suffered some "minor injuries".

Ten people were arrested on charges of rioting in this case.

However, Nandini in a statement to the media yesterday alleged that a mob attacked her and she sustained injuries to her head besides a fracture to her hand.

This crusade to distinguish between legally slaughtered and illegally slaughtered cows has encouraged vigilantes to take law into their own hands. Let the law take its course. The Police should act on tips received from the NGOs and others, and not take them to the place of crime - the vigilantes have a number on the do-gooders and they should be aware of their meddling into police matters and the consequences for so doing.

This incident was the main reason for fight/roits.. arrest the women also for diverting police team against investigation.. A fair investigation should be done i think there is some hidden agenda.

A thief identifies another thief easily / quickly....According to Sanghi eyes all cattle transporters are thieves .... They hide the fact that cattles are purchased ... The cattle transporters are STUPIDS /IDIOTS , as they are taking the risk of transporting the cattles... they should tell the sellers to deliver the cattles at their places .... They are unneccessarily inviting trouble .... I know many BD people selling cattles to muslim customers in many many villages ....
If any bomb blast takes place and people die, it is called terrorist attack ( it should be ) BUT the recent killing of 60+ people in USA is not termed as terrorist attack.. It is dubbed as the act of EVIL MIND ... This is the rule of rich and mighty people .....

Sorry, but who are you to expect that individuals and private NGO's should protest against everything that you feel is wrong in this country.

No one is stopping you from protesting against the attack on this lady. Form an organisation and protest on the streets of Bangalore. But please do not expect someone else to pick up your fight.

Swamy, while I agree that cow vigilantees who take law into their own hands in the name of moral policing is bad, I do think that is the case in this particular incident.

The lady suspected some illegal activity and she approached the police to inquire into the matter by doing a spot check. So what is your issue with this recourse taken by her? What else do you expect her to do when she suspects a crime?
