Bengaluru: Actor Prakash Raj joins protest against GST on handmade products

Bengaluru, Oct 18 (PTI): Noted film actor Prakash Raj today joined the protest being staged by theatre personality Prasanna against the imposition of GST on handmade products.

Prasanna is on indefinite hunger strike for the last five days demanding total waiver of GST on handmade products, saying it would cause the collapse of the rural economy.

Raj, who spoke to a private news channel from the stage said, "It is unfair to impose GST on the products prepared by a tribe, which lives in forest. He pays GST equal to a multinational company. You are not only economically burdening them but also disturbing the social fabric", he said.

"You are breaking them morally and rendering them jobless. This is by a government which said 'Make in India' and promised creating jobs," said Raj expressing solidarity with Prasanna's demand.

"When you see people are suffering because of GST, then it is time to change," said Raj.

Raj has been vocal against Prime Minister Narendra Modi ever since the murder of noted journalist Gauri Lankesh, who was his family friend. He had flayed Modi for his silence on this issue.

Public has become smarter now and know what's right and wrong... .Prakash , if you want to target Modi, look for some different subject ( not sure if you will find any ).... we understand your pain being Gauri's friend... you should have woke up and explained her to stop all non sense she was getting in to. Gettig in to Naxal's , JNU issue and all.. then you were slept and now you woke up to stop what ever Modi is trying to implement... come on sir.. please be focused on your filmy area or drama area... get rid of these political issues.

In India to evade tax people will act like poor ,tribal or a road side vendor ..while in reality he will be a millionaire ... I know a lot of vadapav vendors in Mumbai who earn in thousands per day and still prefer to be road side vendors ,look shabby ..while he earns a few lakhs a month.
This type of attitude of being dishonest is somehow inculcated in us ..
Maybe its time to come out of this ..
While I know that there are genuine and honest people who live in poverty and they need our support .One way we can contribute to their betterment is by paying tax..GST or other

When 20 lakhs is exempted from GST and no tribal or village guy will cross
this limit .further there he can plan his turn over so that a family of 2 adults
will get exemption of 20 lakhs each
I don't think any family with a turnover of 40 lakhs is a poor one

Under GST 20 lakh turnover that is around 5000 per day is exempt from GST. Anyone who has more than 20 lakhs turnover cannot be classified as a small vendor.

    This is really double standards.
The local handicrafts are not being encouraged.
DEMONitization caused great damage last year to all local Industries & MSME's.

Now GST is making them shutdown permanently.
