CBEC to redistribute cases to clear appeals backlog


New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS): In a move to reduce the pendency of cases, the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) has decided to allocate those pending with Principal Chief Commissioners to Commissioner rank officers within the department, an official statement said on Tuesday.

"In order to clear the pendency of cases, as on June 30, 2017, before the Commissioners of Central Excise and Service Tax (Appeals), the CBEC will redistribute the cases pending in the jurisdiction of a Principal Chief Commissioner/ Chief Commissioner of Central Excise and Service Tax, among other Commissioner rank officers posted in that jurisdiction," a Finance Ministry statement here said.

According to available data, 14,706 cases in central excise involving an amount of Rs 3,116 crore were pending before the Commissioner (Appeals) as of January 2017. Pending service tax cases numbered 18,681, involving an amount of Rs 6,563 crore.
