Mangaluru: Firm to check air quality in city during Deepavali

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Oct 17: Under the 'Shuddha Gaali' project, Anti-Pollution Driver (APD) Foundation, an NGO, in association with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), has set up four stations across the city to monitor air quality before and after Deepavali festival.

The assessment of air quality started on Monday, October 16.

"We will assess the air quality on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday," said Abdullah A Rehman, the founder of APD Foundation. There is break for the testing on Wednesday, being festival day.

"Of late, many people are celebrating Deepavali without firecrackers considering the ill effects crackers on environment and health of the people. To motivate people to continue this trend, the foundation has planned three projects for the people. Firstly an eco-friendly Deepavali celebration along with KSPCB that was held at Bearys Public School on Monday," he added.

“The second project is to assess the air quality to show the impact of firecrackers on environment. This project will be supported by St George's Homeopathy. We have started testing the air quality levels in four residential locations for two days starting from Monday. Later, on Thursday and Friday, air quality will be tested at the same locations," he said.

The report of the air quality assessment will be submitted to the district administration, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and department of forest and environment, he informed.

In addition, the APD Foundation will also conduct an advocacy drive, he said.

"We will be submitting a memorandum to the district commissioner appealing him to take five problems, child labour, untoward incidents, air and noise pollution, effect on mental health and improper disposal, which are caused by fireworks, into consideration and take appropriate steps,” he informed.

We have conducted regular air quality assessment and also been working to improvise the air quality of Mangalore city from the past 3 years. This project is purely focused on obtaining data to analyse impact on public health and environment. I request you to take this in a good spirit and work together with APD in mitigating air pollution.

Ban fire work or control not only Diwali time. Also, any celebrations, like wedding Religious festivities, New Year night, any matches victory etc.
Can avoid noise & air pollution and save money which can be donated or used for a better purpose towards economically deprived people or to some social organizations.
In the meantime, we can approach China to supply some innovative way of creating such lighting effects in the sky. (without noise)

Ok ...What about Air Quality on other days ? Just checking is not enough .we need to commit ourselves .everyone needs to think green from a 360 degree perspective .starting from peddling a by-cycle to buy your daily grocery ..or walking to your nearby store ..not riding motor bike ...or maybe using bags made of jute

    Happy Diwali to all...

We are heading into anarchy in pollution...
Pristine water bodies may be a thing of past ...
That too in a matter of 15 years...
Birds will find it difficult to drink water...
Major cities will never have water as now...

Lot of sacrifice has brought us freedom and independence...
Lot more will be in need to keep us living and in contention...

God created the earth for human to inhabit not for destruction. Festivals should be celebrated with right perspective without causing Mother Earth or others any harm. Imagine the level of pollution as crackers are used both in the morning as well as in the night. Nobody is targeting any religion. Preventive measures to be taken for the good of all.
