Mangaluru: Five Indira Canteens to come up in MCC limits, one each in every taluk of DK

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Oct 16: Minister for food and civil supplies U T Khader on Monday October 16 announced that Indira Canteens will be launched in Dakhina Kannada by January 2018, in line with the state government's recent decision to start such canteens in every district and taluk of the state by new year.

Addressing a press meet here, Khader said, "As per chief minister Siddaramaiah's orders, we will start Indira Canteens where food will be available at cheaper rates. Five canteens will be set up within Mangaluru City Corporation limits, and one each in Bantwal, Puttur, Sullia and Beltangady taluks.

"Food for 500 people at a time will be arranged in places with population of 45,000 to 1 lac, and for 300 people at a time in places with population of 25,000 to 45,000. There will be separate a kitchen in areas with more than three canteens, and attached where there is only one canteen in an area. Local representatives have been asked to identify the areas. The building design will be common for all Indira Canteens," he informed.

Commenting on BJP's allegations against Congress Karnataka in-charge K C Venugopal, Khader said, "BJP is unable to digest the way K C Venugopal is strengthening the party, so now BJP is trying to protest against him. Instead of protesting and levelling fake allegations, it would be better to focus on doing something good for the people."

When asked about prevalence of drug mafia at Ullal, Khader said, "Stringent action will be taken against any gang found to be involved with the drug mafia. The government has given free hand to the police department to deal with them, but at the same time to ensure that innocents are not tormented. We need to unite and fight against drug menace in the district instead of politicizing it. There should be discussions on all angles in order to take long term decisions in this regard. This is an inter-state issue, so both the state and the centre should look into this matter, and at the same time public participation is also important, and so also the involvement of police and counselling and treatment to drug addicts."

One more scam in the making by Congress towards their term end. Look at our national carrier Indian Air Lines. Could we handle the competition from private carriers, not even in price not even in Service, Finally closed down.
Same fate to Indira Canteen. Subsidized food supplied to Indira Canteen will make it's way to one of the local hotels close to any MLA. Change in party, change in people will bring in the way they look at development.

Mr. Khader in election fervor conveniently forget the fact that Mr. K C Venugopal was indicted by a Judicial Commission headed by retired HC Judge and even the congressmen in Kerala has not yet questioned integrity of the Commission. As regard to Indira Canteens, food for 500 people at a place with population of 45,000 to 1 lac, and for 300 people in places with population of 25,000 to 45,000 have a coverage of meager 0.5% and cannot be called a social welfare scheme. It is just for printing in election manifesto and to lure hungry ones by showing tip of food packets, to purchase votes. Further, the canteen will be opened only during January-February and will be functional for two months before Karnataka going to election. Highly subsidised food for entire population for whole 5 years is an utopian concept with high budgetary allocation. Those who have no money to repair roads and hospital buildings cannot arrange funds for this. Operation theater of Vijayanagar Medical College at Bellary, which cater to the needs of 6-7 districts in Hyderabad-Karnataka region, collapsed few months back and thousands of poor people are going to Bangalore even for small surgical procedure. Half of the allocation for one Indira Canteen is enough to set up a new OT but Government has not initiated anything. Health Minister is repeating that he is not aware of things. Setting up of Indira canteen on eve of election is a crooked move. Note it, if Congress comes to power, a remote chance as of now, this canteen will be closed one by one on flimsy reasons. If BJP comes to power and close this canteens, they can raise cudgels. A win-win situation without much expenses. Politicians of today are more concentrating how they can dupe people. Total spending for newspaper advertisements per month alone comes to few hundred crores, perhaps more than the budget of schemes itself. Delivery of welfare schemes and ensuring the benefits reaching the deserved ones is driven to backseat...

Only some daily wage workers or migrants will benefit because of this which is good. But they don't have voter ID to vote . Even Indira canteen has got App and you can get the food menu. So the poor can afford smart phones but not food ?

Welcome move by the Karnataka government.

Have strict quality control & hygiene with full CCTV coverage. You never know someone from opposition or local hotel guys may try to defame Indira canteen by illegal means.

Provide clean drinking water alias mineral water recently introduced at KSRTC bus stands at these canteens also. Let the poor & needy benefit from it.
