Chikkamagaluru: Incessant rain causes landslide at Charmadi Ghat, poses risks

Chikkamagaluru, Oct 16: Landslide occurred at Charmadi Ghat road that connects Dakshina Kannada district with Chikkamagaluru. It happened between 5.30 and 6 pm on Sunday October 15, and was caused by incessant rain the area has been experiencing.

Although the road is busy with buses and other vehicles moving all day through, luckily there were no people or vehicles nearby when a part of the hill caved in. At the same time, it gave rise to panic in the minds of road users about the possibility of landslide happening again on a larger scale. Mostly tourists use this road, and they spent anxious moments as traffic jam was experienced at the spot for about an hour after the incident. As the road is narrow at the spot where the landslide happened, long line of vehicles got stranded on both the sides of the road. Police personnel from Banakal station arrived on the spot later and arranged for smooth flow of traffic.



Vehicles which move on Charmadi Ghat road are always apprehensive about the dangers posed by narrow road, landslide, or hurtling down of boulders as the area receives rainfall for most part of the year. Many allege that sand laden trucks coming from Dakshina Kannada which have been taking this road since dusk, have been causing the roadside hills to suffer landslides. Landslide had also happened on the evening of Saturday. Locals want the district administration and state government to take this issue in all seriousness and take suitable steps to extend protection to people using this road.

    Ramanath Rai had mentioned couple of years back about Charmadi Ghat once completed development will be the safest passway for many other area's. What happened Mr. Rai. Any development undertaken with sub-standard contractors and without any Engineering input, will end up in such disaster. Name one development in Karnataka under Congress rule which is technically constructed and implemented.
    No matter whether it's Congress or BJP who ever undertake the complex projects that is including roads and bridge construction should have qualified engineers and advisors to support the construction.

    The Charmady issue is typical, it is because the soil kind is such it loosen’s with heavy rain. In the present situation since rain is continously down pouring, there is a heavy land scape, and making a stone guard to the abutting ghat corridor is not only huge investment, but also practically not possible because of the forest and trees.

    If the ghat corridor is of laterite or any hard rock, then it can be sliped down to prevent caving down. This is not the case in Charmady Ghat.

    I therefore blaming Rai for this hold no water

    He and Bangera deserves to be blamed along with Nalin for not getting the NH234 wisened from Buntwal-Madanthyar- Guruvayankere, as this narrow stretch killed many padestrians due to least or nil padestrian pathway

    As some one said, at Guruvayankere junction a new building recently comeup, and actually in that building place road was supposed to have been widened to increase the space for the karkala side coming vehicle to take a turn towards Belthangady

    NH234 from Buntwal to Charmady is totally a dissasterous narrow route. Shame on the Public works department who till now only inviting tender for feasibility study. When KSHIP project-2 was handed over to NAHI (upon state highway becoming National Highways in 2010) by the state government, the project and cost estimation already prepared then by KSHIP-2, but till now NAHI simply doing timepass tender for new feasibility study. The MLA of Belthangdy and Buntwal as well as MP are seems not serious in getting this stretch widened. How many more lives have to go on road accident to make this politician serious?

    At Guruvayankere which is a 6 way junction, a heavy truck or a modern volvo bus cannot take a smooth turn or 2 heavy vehicles cannot pass simultaneously, and NAHI knowingly allowed a new building to comeup right oposite to the bus-stand (just beside main junction road) without having land record or permission.

    Time alone will prove when these politicians start working in public interest
