Mangaluru: Ignored by authorities, school students fix potholes on highway

Mangaluru, Oct 16: The city is filled with potholes and that has been the main concern of pedestrians and motorists. Students of Bertrand Russell English Medium High School on Saturday, October 14 took the initiative to fill up the potholes near their school at Baikampady.

It has been an accident prone zone as the potholes in that area have gone so deep that motorists need to negotiate the big, wide and deep cracks and end up in an accident, especially the two wheelers. As national highway officials failed to respond even after frequent complaints made by the students of the school, the students and their teachers took the initiative to do the needful. Due to the humungous crack in the road, vehicles used to drive close to the entrance of the school thereby making it difficult for the students to cross the road.













The students, who decided to fill up the potholes, purchased a truck load of laterite stone, crushed them and laid them in the pothole. It took them nearly two hours to finish the task. The public has appreciated the work done by the students. One of the motorists stopped by the spot and served mineral water to all the students.

    Appreciate the school children and school authorities for their social responsiblity.If at all u are thinking about the safety of the children school authorities have their own responsibility.There are many other things which is risky for the life of students.Please raise your voice against it.

    Bertrand Russell English Medium High School Management and teaching staff is using to fix potholes in Baikampady highways..It was not their job to come to the street with minor students. I was regret and oppose the school management & staff why they used school high school students for manpower purpose.
    1.Violation of child labour act.
    2. Have school management ask permission from parents to do so?
    2. Is this intention of show work deficiency of central govt and BJP ruling party?
    3. Why there was no safety materials use while working eg:- hand glouse, clips, wheel barrow to lift laterite stone.
    4. Who is responsible if minor students get injured?

    This is only publicity. One pot hole is filled with waste granite stones. Total cost of the efforts is Rs. 100/- Only. Students energy and precious study time is wasted. Daily i travel that way, school is near the minor bridge, I see some lorries park their vehicles which really obstructing the smooth vehicular movement . Let administration take care of it.

    These school children, who have concern for the pathetic condition of the national highway road adjoining their school, are the role model for today's indifferent citizens and need our appreciation.

    They are certainly going to be very responsible citizens of India, in future.

    Dear Shetre, Please tell me national highway comes under which authority? State or Central Government?
    If Central then whom you should specify in your comment? Who is our beloved Member of Parliament? I dont think its Mr Lobo / Rai / Khader / Bava / Abhayachandra / Shakuntala or Angara?

    Mr matadakani. Before booking school authorities under child labour act Pl book nhai for the accidents took place on this spot. Make them the accused in all the FIRs booked for the accidents on nh66 because of unattended potholes. Book all other school management for using students in swatch bharath. Please visit this place and see how was the road before and now. Don't try to fish in the triubled waters.

    This is India. We don't do anything by ourselves. We dont allow others also to address the issues. We are least bothered whatever happens around us.we are not sensitive to the issues. Nothing disturbed us when so many accidents took place at that particular spot on nh 66. Human lives are an unimportant matter for us. We talk about safety of children when they are with teachers for some good cause and send good message to the society. Someone who talk about child labour and safety should understand that these children have done nothing for money. If the authorities concerned doesn't respond to the students safety on the natinal high way what else they could do to protect themselves. Pl stop finding fault with each and everything. No one will appreciate your negative attitude. Cultivate the habit of calling spider a spider. That's it.

    Here i seen few people are blaming schools authorities instead appriciating the initiative done by students.Why not these critisising people will not go and do the same work. It is good work done by students and they are rolemodel for others .And aldo doing this work may be they saved many lifes if motorist who will die in the accidents due to this pathholes. If all the people are united instead of blaming any political partys in these type issues .We all using same roads. there is nothing special roads for congress or BJP .

    Why question of child labor. It's a sort of public awareness and as far as students are concerned it's type of discipline in life. We too had such menial labor of sort of physical duties to perform during school days.
    If at all want to blame or criticize, call the attention of Corporation authorities by calling public protest against all such carelessness in their duty to public.
    I would have appreciated if the students were given a day off and come in casual cloths for the job.

    Working without any safety /protective gear is really dangerous as these children may not have necessary skill or training to use these equipment. What if a child gets injured?

    In my opinion, this is an irresponsible act by the school administration.

    Getting anyone under the age 18 to work (outside the family), so far as I understand, is illegal in India. It is child labour.

    On top of that, the students are using instruments that can harm themselves and others. Possibility of grave injury.
    Who is responsible if someone gets injured?

    I think the schools must avoid - for fame or otherwise - using students for labour.
