CM Siddaramaiah favours appointing Dalit priests in temples

Bengaluru, Oct 15 (PTI): Taking a cue from neighbouring Kerala, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today spoke in favour of appointing Dalit priests at temples in the state.

"No opposition to appoint Dalits as priests at Muzrai (Department of Religious and Charitable Endowments) temples in Karnataka as done in Kerala. We will do it," Siddaramaiah was quoted as saying in Mysuru.

In Karnataka there were about 35,000 temples under the department, a statement from Chief Minister's Office said.

In a landmark step, 36 non-Brahmins, including six Dalits, were recently recommended for appointment in various temples under the Travancore Devaswom Board in Kerala.

The Board manages at least 1,248 shrines including the famous Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala.

The CPI(M)-led LDF government in Kerala had termed the appointment as a "silent revolution".

Do not read anti-Hindu/Muslim/Christian posts that come on Whatsapp/Facebook/or any other social media, share them not at all. Delete such posts the minute they appear. You have at least one Hindu or Muslim friend. Take care of that friendship. Don't get into fights over religion. If religious riots happen we will loose our very homes. Remember creators of such inflaming anti-religious messages are neither Hindus nor Muslims. India's weakness is religion. On basis of religion we are instigated and then we start fighting amongst ourselves. Guess who benefits from this ! Local and international political powers. Forward this message definitely at full speed to your friend of other religion... becoz more than religion a friends group gives peace and happiness.

    Siddanna,
Please advertise for a post Dalit Priest.
    See, how many will apply.
Poor priest are earning meager amounts struggling to survive.
There are few rich priests in some big temples.
Vast majority of the priests are poor.
The current generation No one wants to peruse career as a priest.
Dalit with advantage of reservation would be the last person to take up Priest's job.
If you think Priest's job is so attractive please appoint your Politicians colleagues as the Priest.
BJP members should thank for your wonderful ideas of making Dalit priests

Who will teach dalits to become priests? They have to learn how to perform puja and recite the holy scriptures first, before becoming temple priests. Would the temples department begin the equivalent of "madrasas"?
Once dalits have learned all this, there should be no objection to becoming temple priests as they do in the christian faith. There are no second-class christian priests or, for that matter, among Christians themselves (perhaps?).

Cannot think beyond Hindu Temples, priest's, Dalits, minorities. First appoint well qualified teachers in all the Gvt schools for the vacant positions, appoint sufficient number of police personal in all the police stations, regularise the service of guest lecturers in Universities, gvt colleges, recruit good number of nurses, doctors in Gvt hospitals, modernise the RTO offices and take back the same old question papers used for the exams to get LLR. City corporation office staffs who are working there for years, make their serVice permanent. You did not build any temple to make recruitment. Build your own Gvt temple and appoint whoever you want....

35,000 temples, from where did you get it?
Government did not build even a single temple...
Instead you notify existing temples and declare it as a mujarai temple. How clever.

First build 35,000 temples on your government money and then talk about recruitment..

    Good move. I appreciate it.

I follow Iskcon. Here to become a "Prabhu" or priest as it is called, you can hail from any sections of the society, any caste, any creed for that matter any religion. Beautiful isn't it.

There are few regulative principles one must follow, go through rigorous training for 3-5 years and then you get qualified as "Prabhu".

It must be noted that, if the above is religiously followed, then great. We do not want priests who offer prayers and theertha in the morning and offer themselves Alcohol and other Taamsic feasts in the evening. If it can be regulated by a higher body, great. Otherwise, a disaster.

By the way, what exactly does a priest do? Basically nothing. At the end of the day, a priest has to mutter some gibberish, wave the harivana with lit camphor for few minutes everyday and then keep distributing tirtha/gandha/prasada the rest of the time. (And sorry to break the life-long held beliefs of many people, they do not have any special hot line to talk to God on priority basis).

Mr. CM, I have a better suggestion. Why just make priesthood caste-neutral? Why not go a step further and make it religion-neutral? Then you can appoint Kazi’s, Maulvi’s, Father’s, Nun’s, Rabi’s, etc as priest in Hindu temples. SIMPLE. Once you do that, then the mosques and church’s in the state will be forced to consider Hindu’s for their religious appointments.

Applicant from all casts should be equally represented for Priest & management positions in Temples. Every prospective candidate for Priest should be well trained and should have minimum college education like Christian priests, Persons with equal knowledge in Indian constitution, Holy Gita, Bible & Koran should be encouraged to apply. God does not need money or wealth because everything is given by God. All temple earnings, property and wealth should be distributed among poor, disabled and most needy people.

You do realise that there is NO SCIENCE behind all the rubbish that a priest does sitting in a temple!!

So what training and what education are you talking about? Do you think a person who has BA & LLB qualification would do a better pooja than, say a 10th pass priest? No matter who does a puja, it does not make an iota of a difference to anyone else. So why bother with all this qualification in constitution and holy scriptures?

    Mr. A.N. D'Souza,
Hindu Priest also tells Hari Kathe, Explains moral behind Holy Gita, Ramayana, Maha Baratha, Veda and all moral and ethical Scriptures to common man in simplified way, He provides counseling and directs needy persons towards social services and free meals. So Good education is very importance to Hindu Priest. An educated Hindu Priest will help the society to eradicate social evils like child marriage, Devdasi system, Dowry system, mis management of temple funds, coruption and gender discrimination Etc,.So College education is very important to Hindu Priest.

    Lord Krishna has said......
