Puttur, Oct 13: A student saved the life of his sister by tying a cloth tightly above her wound and then sucking and spitting blood repeatedly. The sister of the boy was bitten by a snake. This incident was reported from Kokkada.

It is said that the boy in question, Nitin K R, son of Raju, a first PU student of St George PU College at Nelyady and resident of Kannahittilu House in Kokkada, had learnt this as first aid methd in case of snake bites in his school. After his 11-year-old sister, Sharanya, was bitten by a poisonous snake in the farm belonging to the family, Nitin recollected about the first aid method he was told in the school. He tightened a cloth above the wound inflicted by the snake and sucked blood with his mouth from the wound which he spit out.

Sharanya was then taken to a private hospital at Mangaluru. The doctors there, who conducted checks, confirmed that there is a little poison in her body and that she was saved because of timely first aid.

In the meanwhile, snake expert, Gururaj Sanil, said that sucking blood from the wound to take out poison is not very affective, as only about 20 percent poison can be taken out by this method. He said that tying a tourniquet some distance away from the wound or tightening a bandage over the wound would result in slowing down the speed with which poison spreads in body.
