Bengaluru: Deadly pothole kills couple, granddaughter injured

Bengaluru, Oct 4: A deadly pothole on BGS flyover on the busy Mysuru Road claimed the lives of a couple early on Tuesday morning and left their six-year-old granddaughter injured.

The accident occurred around 1.30 am when Anthony Joseph (55), riding a Honda Activa bike with his wife and granddaughter on pillion, veered to the right to avoid a gaping pothole. He lost control over the bike in front of Nalanda theatre and all three fell to the ground.

A Tamil Nadu Road Transport Corporation bus right behind Joseph’s two-wheeler, ran over him and his wife Sagai Mary (52), killing them on the spot.

Their grandchild Akuila Sherin, who fell to one side, survived with minor injuries, said Shivakumar T P, DCP Traffic (West).

The couple were residents of Jagajeevanram Nagar. Passersby shifted all the three to Victoria Hospital. Anthony and Sagai were declared brought dead, while Akuila was discharged after treatment.

The couple were returning from St Martha’s Hospital after getting their granddaughter treated for high fever. Police said Akuila was Joseph’s daughter’s child and stayed close to their house.

Around 11.30 pm on Monday, Joseph’s daughter complained that Akuila was running high fever. Joseph and Sagai reached their daughter’s house and took the child to hospital, police said.

Police arrested the bus driver following a complaint filed by Joseph’s son Ignisious Deepak. The driver has been booked for negligent driving under sections 304A of IPC and 337 and 279 of Motor Vehicles Act.

Two more motorists fell down after hitting the same killer pothole later in the day when the traffic police were inspecting the accident spot.

Siddharamaiah had 4 and half years time , they are even governing BBMP , KJ George is in charge of Bangalore, just look at the status of roads in Bangalore it's just pathetic. , There is water logging everywhere. Contractors are just making money. And Siddhu and George are taking cuts from them.

Very sad to know the tragic incident...
These type of modern constructions must have high quality to resist weather conditions and heavy traffic...
    Obviously built under compromising conditions...
However grand father probably should have ridden the vehicle slower and with more control to be watchful of the dangers ahead...
Especially with sick child he should have been extra vigilant...
Lives are regularly lost... Lessons hardly learnt...
RIP... May God give strength to the bereaved family...

Innocent people including children dying for no mistake of theirs , thanks to Pothole Bhaagya by Sidhu govt is not a big issue for Dongis , Comis and intellectual actrs . But a sick minded comi in disguise of a tabloid jurnolist death is a national issue for these people for which Modi is responsible. Comis life matters, not innocent citizens.

I will never pay a Single rupee fine even if I don't wear Helmet or for not possessing RC book or no Insurance or no Emission Certificate.
My question is when the roads have become killer roads, then why should I pay?
When the government cannot provide the good roads with our own money, then why should i pay Tax, Insurance, Fines or for not wearing helmets.
All roads have become death traps. If you are not aware of the roads, for sure you will lose life or also spoil your Vehicle.
I request all the road users not to pay any fine instead fight with those who try to collect fines or intimidate you.

I agree with you Mr. Kiran.... Even in Mangalore very bad situation of the road.. speciall Pumpwell to
Bendoor... Why Government asking fine for No Helmet and No Insurance. That is our wish. If we want we are paying Insurance , If we want we wearing helmet... Who is the hell are they to ask fine for Helmet and Insurance. First let them repair the road.

The TN bus driver is an easy target for the police to book. The poor guy probably has no basic knowledge of the law and is probably a man with limited means to hire a decent lawyer.

Why doesn't the police file FIR under section 304A against the IAS officer or Exec Engineer of the PWD office that is responsible for this section of the road?

No one is responsible for the child's death in Parkala yesterday; and no one is responsible for the couple's death in Bangalore today (other than the scapegoat TN driver).
