Dubai: UAE begins collecting 'sin' taxes on tobacco, energy drinks

Dubai, Oct 1 (AP): The United Arab Emirates has begun collecting new 'sin' taxes on tobacco products, energy drinks and soft drinks.

Beginning today, tobacco and energy drinks will be taxed at 100 per cent and soft drinks at 50 per cent. Shoppers could be seen stocking up the day before.

The new tax push comes as the UAE and other oil-rich Gulf nations have struggled with low global energy prices. The UAE will start collecting a 5-per cent value-added tax on certain goods in January.

All six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council have agreed to begin collecting so-called VAT taxes, though others may begin later than January.

The GCC includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

2016 - Demonetization & eradication of black money in India has wiped out a high yield lucrative source of income.
2017 - VAT & Sin Tax would increase the price of the commodities.
For the local population it wouldn't have much effect as they have social security, marriage fund, employment in govt., firms (even if they don't do much work) & even they own the buildings and rent it out to the expatriates, which the latter make it less affordable for their fellow citizens with the concept of "key money" where the people charge a certain amount to transfer the accommodation to the next person who wants to rent it out. Even the recruitment works in similar concept. Those working in sales dept., of big companies & those who have their own firms make good money with under the table dealings which is based on certain percentage to be given to the person in charge of the deal.

I am so overwhelmingly happy.Good and Noble decision by Our highness.I am anti tobaccan, anti soft drinker and anti smoker. Just fed up of seeing small kids with energy drinks in their hands. These dangerous drinks have already ruined many youths. If we notice youths are either so sensitive that if their parents scold they commit suicide or if their friends mock they kill them. All this happening due to daily intake of such unhealthy carbonated drinks and drugs. If this continues drugs will make youths live zombies.

Sin tax is not applicable on Alcohol . In Dubai, there is already municipality tax of 30% on alcohol and 20% duty . Dutyfree will be without taxes and duty.

SIN TAX is a tax on a product or activity, esp. liquor, tobacco, or gambling, customarily regarded as sinful or harmful.

Sugar Daddy / Sugar Baby system is better than polygamy. The latter comes with some kind of a contact whereas the former doesn't have any, even though both are similar concepts. In former, Sugar Daddy takes care of the needs of the Sugar Baby like clothing, tuition or even housing in return for anything & everything. Both can break up anytime, which automatically cuts off the needs too or they can continue until the Sugar Baby decides to get married & have a family.

These taxes are necessary as oil prices are going down in gulf countries. But it is bad for expatriates as they have to take this burden of 'sin' taxes. Worst is yet to be seen in the future.

..first OIL shipment from US arrived in INDIA last week..many thought US dependent on oil, its not..they have huge untapped oil reserve..for them its profitable to import from ME..their investment, their company, their machinery & land is from ME countries....this is how US minted money (CHINA going to do same in pakistan via CPEC)..In ME, revenue falling, new taxes are coming and expats will be hardly hit in coming days..

US minted money because of Petrodollar System, brainchild of Nixon and Kissinger, which mandated all OPEC oil & gas transactions in only in USD. Now things are changing…but still most of OPEC members transact their petro output in USD only.

Dear Cyril…on lighter note….I like your comments….but thinking seriously….it’s good that you did not blame NaMo or NDA for VAT in UAE… In fact VAT is going to be implemented w.e.f. 01st Jan’18 but recently we have some “WhatsApp” message that due to GCC internal problem particularly Qatar will not agree to implement VAT and Oman is little reluctant to impose VAT since it will back fire them due to large number of local population… In fact this is “Excise Duty” imposed only on tobacco products and energy drinks of which sugar contents are more
