Bengaluru: With friends busy taking selfies, PU student drowns in temple tank

Bengaluru, Sep 26 (DHNS): A 17-year-old student of National College Jayanagar, drowned on Sunday at Ravugodlu village, where he had gone trekking.

G Vishwas and 24 students from the college had been to the village, off Kanakapura Road, on Saturday, and stayed overnight at the Gunda Anjaneya temple.

They were part of the National Cadet Corps, camping out on the outskirts of the city.

On Sunday morning, they set out on a trek to a hill in Ravugodlu. They came down around 2 pm. About a dozen students then went to the temple kalyani (stepped tank) to swim.

The tank is about 10 feet deep, and Vishwas, who did not know swimming, joined the group.

His friends were busy playing in the water and taking selfies when Vishwas went down in the water.

Sumanth A, a student in the group, said, “We were done swimming and started for the temple, and realised Vishwas was not around.”

A boy in our group was replaying selfie videos on his mobile phone and noticed Vishwas drowning in the tank.”

The boy alerted Girish, the college NCC chief, and other friends. “By the time we came back to the kalyani, an hour had passed,” Sumanth said.

Father’s misery

Govindaiah, Vishwas’s father, was appalled the college had not called him to tell him about what had happened.

“I received a call from his friends and reached the spot. Neither Girish nor the college authorities informed me about the incident,” he said.

The college had taken the boys out on an NCC camp. They should take responsibility for our children’s lives, he added.

“The Kaggalipura police called Girish over the phone and told him to appear before them, but he didn’t turn up,” Govindaiah, who works as an auto driver, said.

Why media is not asking for the principal and top notch of the college to be arrested, may be this young life was of little or no value.
I suggest this case be reported to Haryana police, they will definitely swing to action, regardless of the outcome, they may even arrest the maker of the mobile in which this picture (selfie) was taken for not installing death alarm.

Death numbers are mounting up with craze for " Selfies" .!! But how can you stop it? Here, in this case deceased Vishwas would have screamed for help while others would have thought he is also screaming with them to pose for Selfie.!! Imagine they did not even realise he was missing for almost an hour.!! Ironical and shocking isnt it?
When friends get together what happens and when n how is a question to be understood by parents. Dear Parents it is heart breaking to see, so many of our young ones just going like this with craze or say false vanity for selfies, craze for " Killer bikes" etc. Please do take care.
In this case in my opinion school has nothing to do as how can they keep a track of these selfies n group ( say crazy mob..!) mentality of youngsters. !!
It's just bad luck of Vishwas and his parents really. It was heart breaking to see his father crying coz parents live with that tragedy until they are gone.! why dont our youngsters understand this.!!

What's with this generation's obsession with selfies I just can't seem to understand! Everywhere they go they have to pose and pout, so much that they don't even realise a friend is missing. Are these photos really about friendship? Or just vanity? People have lost lives trying to capture the perfect selfie. Still others wander the same path... Strange times...
