Rahul Gandhi describes Mahatma Gandhi as an NRI

New York, Sep 22 (Zee News): Rahul Gandhi has asserted that original Congress movement was an NRI (non-resident Indian) movement and described prominent freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi as an NRI.

While urging the diaspora in the United States to come forward with their ideas for another movement of transforming India, Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said, "Mahatma Gandhi was an NRI. Jawaharlal Nehru came back from England. Ambedkar, Patel, Maulana Azad, everyone of them went to the outside world, saw the outside world, returned to India and used some of the ideas that they had got and transformed India."

Gandhi, who is on a two-week visit to the US, termed the Non-Resident Indians "as the backbone of the country" and said he was keen to involve them in the work of the party to discuss its vision forward.

Praising the Indian community's contribution to the country's progress, the Gandhi scion said, "Wherever I went, you made me feel proud to be an Indian."

Appealling to the NRIs to support the grand old party, Rahul Gandhi said Congress Party represented a philosophy that is thousands and thousands of years old.

Sam Pitroda, who is chairman of Overseas Congress and spoke before Gandhi, urged the NRIs to stand up for the right cause, he said Congress "needs help today".

Gandhi, 47, made the comments during his xtwo-week-long tour US tour, which concluded on Thursday.

The BJP has been accusing Gandhi of tarnishing India's image abroad by his comments.

Modi went to Madisson Square and while addressing the India diaspora there said 'Mahatma Gandhi was NRI like you' and everyone burst into applause. Three years later Rahul goes to US and says Mahatma Gandhi was NRI and it becomes a joke! Did Mahatma Gandhi change his status in the last 3 years? Nothing but pure jealousy that Rahul Gandhi too is invited to US and is addressing Indian diaspora, students there and has been getting a lot of support for his genuine views and honest admissions and followers of his political opponents can't digest it because they have never been fed with reality but only fake slogans.

Mr. Shetty, Certainly not a big issue in that but for some of us Indians, no matter what Rahul Gandhi says it becomes a joke and if the same is said by the PM it becomes 'Veda-vaakya'

    Difference is just that.

The 180 days criteria for treating as non resident is considered for taxing purposes only. in normal parlance the status is applicable when one is abraod and the status gets changed after he returns to India. the gaffe is harmless though. i agree to Rahul gandhi in the substance part of it. yes NRIs Contribution to this Country is huge.

Oh really ? What is tragic about calling Gandhiji, NRI ? At-least he did not go there to crib about Demonetization, GST and the falling GDP ? If it was Modi, he would not have missed one chance !

What tragedy are you speaking of. Get the Facts right before commenting. Its better than
    1. "MITROON" Bluffing
    2. Running from Media & Parliament
    3. World Tour at Tax payers money and then canvassing of the loopholes within the country. Showing Disrespect to the National Anthem.
    4. And last but not the least. Double Standards on all issues, from Lynching to AADHAR and price hike.

He is proud of Indians abroad. He did not to there to complain about Modi government's errors as the Indian PM did when he went to the US. PM Modi did not have the decency of keeping political errors within the borders but Rahul Gandhi ensured it.

    Jaimini,

Gandhiji returned to India at the request of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, in 1915. The freedom of struggle lasted for about 90 years, from 1857 to 1947.

Now, tell me - was Gandhiji an NRI at the larger length of the freedom struggle, or not ?

What is wrong in his comment?
    Are NRIs not patriotic?
Mahatma lived away from India for a few years and he can be called as NRI...
If any resident Indians take offense on this comment then you all are hating us in unison...
    Please refrain...
We love our great nation as much as you do...
Only for livelihood we are here...
