Mangaluru: Cops act against illegal parking, lock bikes with wheel clamp

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (PMD)

Mangaluru, Sep 22: Rows of bikes were locked with wheel clamps by the police in a drive recently, to curb illegal parking and avoid obstruction to normal movement of traffic, at Attavar.

"For the last two days bikes and scooters parked at the fifth and sixth cross at Attavar were locked with a wheel clamp. At a time, more than ten bikes were locked. There have been plenty of complaints from citizens about parking. The police phone in session also saw many such complaints. Hence, we have initiated the action," said Traffic ACP Tilak Chandra.

"The fifth cross has a residential area and a school. As the parked vehicles caused hindrance to the passing of school vehicles and residents' vehicles, the said operation was held.

"Obstruction of traffic will invite a fine of Rs 100. If parked in a no-parking zone and parked in a way that obstructs movement of traffic, the fine will be doubled," said traffic east police inspector Suresh Kumar.

Police said that the drive will continue.

Thank you Mangalore Police. Please HEAVILY fine the buses that emit thick black smoke. They're increasing by the day.

Officials need to note this, or take responsibility for respiratory disorders that ensue.

The Mangalore Police Traffic department has been taking a lot of trouble in educating the public regarding parking ,wearing of helmets etc. It is good to see that the traffic police are now moving in the right direction under the guidance of The Assistant commissioner of Police Mr. Tilakchandra. It is however felt that the fine of just Rs.100/- is too low a figure. This should enhanced to at least Rs.500/-

In United States the films in the region of $150/- which over Rs.8,000/-

people forget that riding/driving a bike or car is a privilege. It isn't a right.

Besides many factors come to light -

    1) Illegal construction in parking spaces
    2) Lack of footpaths for pedestrians (smart city, huh?)
    3) Bad functioning of public transport, which is why our roads get widened, trees get felled and land gets encroached. If only public transport was revamped, things would have gotten much better.

There are many such places (cross roads) where vehicles are being parked in a helter-skelter manner obstructing others and the residents of the areas creating problems to move freely on the roads. So the traffic police have to identify such places and lock the vehicles and put an end to such type of irregular parking. Also on main roads only one side be allowed to park the vehicles and not on both sides which hinders traffic movement. The roads are widened and concreted for the sake of publi. But not parking of vehicles. So the very purpose of widening the roads is defeated if parking is allowed on both sides.

Traffic police only harass only 2 wheeler owners. Private buses going from KPT to Nantoor and taking a right there, go to the extreme left and then push all other vehicles and force thier way into right. This is extremely dangerous. There is a traffic police there, highway patrol etc but they only turn blind for this and stop and check two wheelers or out of state trucks. There are many such instances where dominance of private bus mafia is significantly shown. Sometimes because of this people take law into thier own hand, but if we go and shout at these bus drivers/conductors, then they shout at us back and if someone hits them then there is a immediate all district bus strike.

Good move.. We should fine them..this will stop them from parking in places which they are not suppose to park blocking traffic. Sometime the pedestrians it becomes difficult to walk on the footpath as people just park where they like. In our country people are only building malls and other tall rising buildings but there is no enough place to park as well as no place for pedestrians to walk.. It's a shame

if parking two wheeler block the smooth movement of the traffic, what about the private buses which stops in the middle of the road to eject its passengers and cause accidents? police should equally treat this.

Rs 100 (or in some cases Rs 200) fine?

That is no way enough as a deterrent.

If the fine is Rs 1,000 (and double that in some cases), the offenders are likely to get the message.

    Good Move!!
I faced the similar issue at my work place..
In Kottara, flower vendors sell their flowers in footpath (where people will wait for their bus or please use footpath for their way) at evening time and there are many customers for them.. Since there is no parking area, all the bike/cars/ even few big buses park their vehicle in the side of the road and purchase the flowers and hence because of this, passerby and people who wait for bus will have lot of problem of using the footpath... Sometimes because of this parked vehicles,. I have to use 1/4 th of the road to move on and which it makes me fear of my life!!!
    Do something for this!!!!

This is very much concern . In the afternoon City / Services buses park at the same place . Due to which crossing the road becomes risky . There is a flower stall , pani puri stall & a person selling corn . People just park as they wish to buy those item 's & block the roads . Also there are distribution vans who park & create issue. Because of all these the express or other buses stop at odd place to pick people . It has become risky .

What about the widened roads are used for car parking at kankanady Mother Theresa road. There is no place for d pedestrians to walk. Why no actions are taken by the RTA department. At least the cars can b towed to the concerned place n make way for atleast for the pedestrians and fine the vehicle owners so that they will be cautious next time. It seems like roads are widened for the parking of vehicles.

These are cross roads. Why don't you book the parked vehicles on the main roads / concrete roads. Take a look around Kadri, mallikatta, Balmata to kankanady, roads are ment for 2 vehicles but one only can pass... Sad thing is buses are parked n police sees only bikes.
