Rohingyas illegal immigrants, not refugees: Rajnath

New Delhi, Sep 21 (PTI): The Rohingyas were illegal immigrants and not refugees who had applied for asylum in India, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today.

Addressing a seminar organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Singh asked why some people were objecting to the deportation of Rohingyas when Myanmar was ready to accept them.

"The Rohingyas are not refugees. They have not come here after following proper procedures. No Rohingya has applied for asylum. They are illegal immigrants," he said.

The home minister also said that India would not violate any international law by deporting Rohingyas as it was not a signatory to the UN Refugees Convention 1951.

The NHRC recently issued a notice to the Centre over its plan to deport Rohingyas, who are residing in various parts of India.

According to the Commission, from the human rights angle its "intervention is appropriate" in the matter.

We are already overburdened with Bangladeshi people crossing over to West Bengal/Kerala & other states of India and causing all sort of problems as well as ruining our economy. We don't want another case of illegal immigrants Rohingyas. There are many reasons as they are changing our demography.

The Centre’s vision in dealing with Rohingya Muslim ‘refugees’, who have suffered extreme levels of violence and other privations in Myanmar, is not sufficiently based on classifying who should or should not be granted refugee/asylum status. After all, India has granted the same status to Afghans who fled the civil war in Afghanistan through the 1980s and 1990s, ethnic Kachins from Myanmar, Buddhist Chakmas and Sri Lankan Tamils. The lack of compassion can seem all the more strange since India has traditionally opened its doors to persecuted minorities, starting from the Parsis in the 8th century to the Tibetans, the “East Pakistanis” in 1971, the Sri Lankan Tamils and others.
It will be unwise for India to view the Rohingya Muslims on its territory as a security threat or even as a threat to its major societal values. Likewise, an explanation that the Rohingyas are an economic burden does not hold water because their numbers are minuscule.
For all practical purposes, Myanmar can be said to have dumped its problem on its reluctant neighbours. But how long the latter can play host to this unassimilated group is open to question. There are already stirrings of unease in Bangladesh, which is bearing the brunt of the exodus from Myanmar.
"India should show leadership by protecting the beleaguered community." If Modi government consider them threat based on their religion, the nation has already lost former PM Rajiv Gandhi to LTTE. Though Sri Lanka has found the peace by liberating the LTTE from its own soil, India has still hosting the Tamil refugees who supported them. It is not only Tamil refugees but Tamil political parties which openly supported the LTTE are part of the BJP government during 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The Rohingyas status are just like people affected by natural calamity and lost everything. But they can rebuild their homes once again.
Rohingyas are humans like any other. Refugees should not be viewed with religion. Humanity should be respected.

Sir, we do not want rohingyas permanently India would have been proper statement.
I would like to reiterate, India has granted the same status to Afghans who fled the civil war in Afghanistan through the 1980s and 1990s, ethnic Kachins from Myanmar, Buddhist Chakmas and Sri Lankan Tamils. The lack of compassion can seem all the more strange since India has traditionally opened its doors to persecuted minorities, starting from the Parsis in the 8th century to the Tibetans, the “East Pakistanis” in 1971, the Sri Lankan Tamils and others.
For your knowledge, India has lost its Prime Minister and number of soldiers to LTTE than any other militant group.
Vaiko is an Indian politician . He is the founder and General Secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), a political party active mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu.Vaiko unequivocally supported LTTE and other organizations fighting for a separate Tamil country in Sri Lanka. He made a trip to Eelam at the height of the LTTE's war with Sri Lankan Army.Vaiko was the first member of Parliament and chief of a registered political party in the country to be detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002. He was released after spending 18 months in prison.
But BJP which is against Rohingya citing Rohingya as security threat to the nation had coalition in 2014 Lok Sabha in Tamil Nadu. It forged an alliance with ULFA and Naga militants who operated from Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Now for example if lightning strikes at your home(God forbidden) and lost all your life savings and your neighbour denies sheltering where do you go? Don't you opt for safe place where you and your family feel safe?
The government of India cannot have double standard on refugees.
Gentleman, European bombings are much do with 'Brexit' and 'Frexit' in France. Refugee is just an excuse to deny rights by this country know to champions of humanity.
    More than religion humanity prevails.
    Jai hind

Kashmir is burning because of these morons like useless HM AND FAKE SURGICAL STRIKES WAS TOTAL BLUNDER. We know how he
perceives an immigrant juxtaposed to a refugee. While an
immigrant can be only legal a refugee who has come in seeking
refuge from genocide and racist violence he cannot be asked to
produce papers to prove he/she is "genuine immigrant" Rohingyas
do not claim so! The Rohingyas are being labeled "illegal" simply
because they are Muslim and Bengalis. Had these people been
Hindu running away from atrocities Rajnath would have called
them genuine refugees. What do you expect from the Home
Minister of a Govt whose head visits the place where genocide is
on and congratulates the Govt there for fighting "terror". In other
words victims of genocide are terrorists and perpetrators are
heroes. Hitler is hero and the Jews killed in holocaust are terrorists!
    Typical Hindutva logic.

If you have so much love for rohingyas, please call them to Bahrain and make arrangements for their settlement.

We Indians do not want those terrorists to settle in India and make our life miserable. India has its own problem like Pakistan and China to tackle.

We have live example of European countries which were peaceful once and after they allowed illegal immigrants to settle their, it has turned in to hell.

Kashmir was burning even in 2010 during UPA rule when more than 130 people died. Regarding Rohingyas we don't want them in India and majority of Indians are with Modi on this decision. We know what happened to Europe for showing compassion to Syrian and Yemeni Refugees. And you were against Rohingyas being sheltered here and wanted their deportation just a few days back, I had read your comments,. How come sudden change of stance? Just to oppose government?

Bangladeshis had been living illegally since the time of Indira Gandhi and Praful Kumar Mahanta of Assam demanded their ouster in the early 1980s. Unfortunately today they have swarmed in cities like Mumbai and Bangalore posing severe security threats. In 2012 they went on a rampage in Mumbai destroying public property when Rohingyas were being killed in Myanmar. And Kashmiri Pandits were driven out of their state during the tenure of Narasimha Rao and till date no measures were taken to bring them back home. All for maintaining vote banks intact.
