Mangaluru: Short of money, family struggles to get body of deceased youth

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 21: A hospital here refused to hand over the body of a youth who failed to respond to treatment and breathed his last at the said hospital, because of pending bill. The hospital management insisted on full payment of bill for handing over the mortal remains. Activists of an organization, who came to know about the incident, intervened in the matter and held discussions with the hospital concerned, and succeeded in getting conditional release of the body by the hospital to the relatives.

Rasheel Salian (25), son of Ramakrishna from Attavar, who was suffering from pneumonia, had been admitted into a private hospital in the city. Treatments given at the hospital could not improve his condition. He passed away on September 18, as per information.

In the meanwhile, the hospital bill had mounted to eight lac rupees. Ramakrishna could put together only two lac rupees and had requested the hospital to release the body of his son, duly promising to clear off the balance dues in a few days. But the hospital management stood its ground, insisting on full payment of the bill before the mortal remains could be handed over to the family. The body of the youth therefore remained in the hospital for three days.

Volunteers of 'Yuva Vahini' organization, led by activist, Sunil Kumar Bajal, visited the hospital and held discussion with the hospital. The hospital thereafter relented and agreed to release the body with the condition that balance dues should be paid within a month.

OMG.I was about to get a heartattack when I heard the bill first and next the patient was kept in ICU for 2months for pnuemonia. Was it a hospital approved one ?ask what treatment was given there and proof.why their relatives were not informed before administrating so costly drugs?and still they couldnt save patient.I am afraid something had gone wrong there.Either this pnuemonia turned up other complications and not able to control?or developed some resistence to antibiotics.Nowadays many dont react to antibiotics due to resistence develope,or was diagnosed wrong and therapy was quite naturally didnt act.Horrible situation when one is not having knowledge and have to believe doctors.Money here was also a question.Relatives should have thought first when they had no sources to pay. Private means money minting machinery.Poor family.heartfelt sympathy to them.May his soul rest in peace.

The victim was kept in ICU for 2 months before he closed his eyes enduring the pain and torture inside that room. When asked to the doctors about his improvement in condition, the reply was that he was administered all types of medicines including the costliest medicine with Rs8000/- still he is not recovering. He had become a test specimen in the hands of PG students which was clearly evident from the way they handled him. At a later stage before his death when he was showing improvements, the ICU management had changed the whole team of doctors and nurses inside due to their monthly shifts which made the new management completely alien about his condition and deteriorated his health. While the bills kept skyrocketing, condition kept going worse. This is the condition of private hospitals in the country.

May his soul rest in peace.

Government failed to bring healthcare under GST with strange reason that it will raise healthcare prices !!! What a funny argument to accommodate biggest black money generator !!!

If pharmacy bills can be brought under GST, what is the government problem in bringing healthcare under GST ? Even you keep only 1% GST rate and make all hospital payments through digital payments & compulsory bills if paid through cash. This will veed out stinking black money from hospitals/medical profession. This is a sector where black money rotates from admission to medical colleges to harassing patients.

These white collar professional thugs need to be brought under control only through including entire medical chain under GST compulsorily. Why exception to this biggest black money generator ?

But, will the governments ready when they get free kickbacks and most of these so called hospitals are run by their own kith & kin ?

    RIP

    Very sad.

All Hospitals & Doctors become commercialised.

Mr. Pinto, for any wrong happening in State people like you have only one reason, Central Government's failure??? GST this , that, before GST introduced , all this years you neve spoke about GST under other government.

Due to hate mentality even you forgoten to give condolences .

It is a serious issue, stop blaming X, Y, Z, we the public should seriously spare some time to work on this. All Hospitals in Karavali district become commercialised. When you go just for a minor problem, they will insist you to do scanning, X-ray, different types of Blood tests etc.

My simple question is before this scanning machine introduced, Doctors are not treating the Patients successfully?

    It is truly said:
Doctor kills your ills by his pills
and later, kills you by his bills.

This seems to be a good pvt hospital that took care of the patient even though day to day bills were not paid. In Mumbai, pvt hospitals such as Fortis, send incremental bill everyday to your mobile and ask for the shortfall with a caveat, they are forced to stop treatment if the shortfall is not cleared.

This Mangalore hospital management is really smart and since Yuva Vahini is involved, they quickly smelt the rat. Whether they get remaining amount or not, they have averted the organizations' show of militant strength.

8 lakh for treating pneumonia! No surgery, yet high bills. Govt should provide free unlimited Mediclaim insurance to all its citizens.
Govt to take steps to prevent multiple insurances we pay everywhere right from bank accounts, vehicle PA etc. Unified portal with AADHAAR link should be mapped to counter multiple insurances.

Healthy people who can work don't need free rice, they need healthcare whenever they fall critically ill & in old age...

A bill of 8 lakhs for treating pneumonia would not have been anticipated by the family. The hospital should have employed some other means of recovering money from the family. Keeping the body for three days is inhumane.
The conditions in Government hospitals is deplorable and the costs for critical care in private hospitals have skyrocketed. Our medical Insurance is also is misused by patients and hospitals alike and therefore Insurance premiums are largely unaffordable to many classes of society. People do not want to get admitted to general wards in private hospitals because of ego problems and get admitted to higher paying rooms without realising that all costs incurred therein (ICU etc.) will be multiplied by a huge factor and they end up with a fat bill.
