Modi-Jaitley meet to explore remedy for 'ailing' economy postponed

New Delhi, Sep 19 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stocktaking of the economy at a meeting with the finance ministry, has been postponed.

Modi was to meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian and other top officials in the finance ministry on Tuesday evening to analyse the economic situation and explore options to stimulate the economy.

The meeting has been postponed by a few days, official sources said. No new dates have been proposed as yet.

Prime Minister's Office has asked finance ministry to hold consultations with key ministries to prepare a matrix of government revenues and spending as well as the measures needed to arrest the decline in GDP growth, the sources said.

Sectoral reasons and action points would be prepared, they said, adding that high level discussions with ministries such as railways to assess the capital requirement for the year were held on Monday and more such meeting would follow.

Similar discussions are planned with the road transport and highways ministry to assess spendings on infrastructure projects.

Discussions, attended by Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, P K Mishra, are also happening with commerce and industry ministry on exports.

Two years ago, India was touted as a rare bright spot in a gloomy global economy with GDP growth outpacing a slowing China. But since early 2016, GDP growth has fallen for six consecutive quarters, dipping to three-year low of 5.7 per cent in the April-June quarter with India losing the fastest growing economy tag to China for the second straight quarter.

The sources said the government is keen to address structural problems facing the economy as well as transient issues with implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

GST was was touted to boost growth by up to 2 percentage point but technical glitches in the first two months of implementation has only created a scare of revenues falling way short of expectations.

Sources said two issues the PMO wants fixed quickly are sluggish exports and private investment not picking up.

Demonetisation of old 500 and 1000 rupee notes, which constituted 86 per cent of the currency in circulation, had impacted cash-dependent informal sectors of the economy and small enterprises.

Sources said targeted government spending given the limited fiscal space available particularly on infrastructure, combined with quickly fixing the problems with GST and focusing on sectors and industries that create jobs are the prime focus.

The government is concerned over the stuttering growth despite a benign macroeconomic environment with easy money flowing in, global growth reviving, government revenues looking solid, deep foreign exchange reserves, reasonable oil prices and a decent monsoon keeping food prices in check.

Besides falling GDP growth rate, exports are facing strong headwinds and the industrial growth is the lowest in five years. The current account deficit (CAD) - the difference between inflow and outflow of foreign exchange, has risen to 2.4 per cent of GDP in April-June.

CEA Arvind Subramanian had last week briefed the Prime Minister on macro-economic situation.

If only Modi and Jaitley had humility to take heed of Man Mohan Singh, Chidambaram, Amartya Sen and host of economists advice, this sorry state would not have happened. Instead, these two guys insulted them whenever and wherever possible. Under these two guys there is no future for the common man.

The economy is 'ailing' for the poor Indian masses only, not for them who call the shots to ensure that cash flows freely into their coffers. Thus no need for any remedy.

If people have elected the Yale visitors instead of economists to guide the country, well, the people need to live with the Yale visitor results!

    As simple as that.

This is the tragedy of democracy.

Democracy is useful when at least a third of the voters are educated enough to understand the national impact of their vote.

China has progressed leaps and bounds because the leadership in China understood the pitfalls of democracy in a large but developing country.

Indians have elected Yale visitors firmly convinced that these Yale visitors have answers to all the ills plaguing India.

And what do we get? A bullet train for the Gujaratis (1,10,000 crores to be paid by all Indians), and a drop of 2% in the GDP growth!

Not only economy is ailing, congress supports criminals of BJP and BJP supports criminals of Congress. What about Yeddy? What about cleansing of Ganga (eventhough a separate Central Minister appointed and billions of funds poured - still nothing has happened), what about price rise of food articles and sufferings of poor and middle class due to demonetization, what about sky rocketing petrol, deisal price comparing to International Crude prices, almost on a daily basis our soldiers/BSF personnel are dying, what about GST (a total confusion, along with GST some hotels in Mumbai are collecting previous type of taxes also), Why GST does't apply to Oil Price, Ask any citizens of Mumabites, they will say the plight of price rise, closure of small entrepreneur) forget about Mumbai, go around Mangalore, small hotels, entrepreneurs, real estate were closed, business is dull, lost employments, new opportunities almost blank, Where is promised money back from Swiss and each Indian family account will be credited with Rs.14.00 lacs?........ Where is real development and so called ache din....? People are afraid to talk about reality of government...

And many more endless .... Having said the above, not forgotten the Most Corrupt Congress, and Congress were and are supporting the criminals. Yes, it is very true Mr. Modiji want to develop the nation, but where is the support of Ministers? Are they are capable, what about RBI Governor?
Only hope is AAP.... Brilliant Ex IAS Officer, Superior in ADMINISTRATION.

The financial scenario of country is not good. Unemployment has increased tremendously but not reflected in official figures as employment exchange registration is not done. There is drop in tax deducted at source of Income tax in this quarter. This is clear indication that economy of India is not well. I think now he will change the financial year from April - March to January - December so that actual GDP figures are hidden. There is a possibility of budget being presented in November. This govt is only interested in making Aadhar compulsory for each and everything.

Very good hypocrite Jeevan. For Modi's failures blame the previous government. Then why did Modi promised so many things during election rallys? Why no arrest of Robert Vadra???? Congress is preventing Modi to take action against Vadra????? If Modi cannot run the government, he need to resign if he has self respect.

This government is not capable of repairing the economy. India is not a tea shop. This government need to resign immediately and there should be a government which is capable of bringing back economy on track. We cannot wait for next two years for this government to complete the term. This government is putting all burden on common man and spend lavishly. PM and his ministers are having lavish life style and MP's and MLA's too have lavish life. If this government really is concerned with economy change the finance minister and RBI governor. They are useless. Bring qualified people on board and it won't matter if those qualified are outside political class. Modi doesn't have any vision that earlier PM's P.V. Naraimha Rao and Manmohan Singh had. Modi even doesn't have control over corruption within his own party. 100% failed government.

From the day demonetization took place Ex PM MMS has been continuously warning about the falling GDP and its impact on the economy but no one bothered to listen to him. Now people of the country are at the receiving end for the action of a few who have no idea where they are heading. After 2 years when this government demits its office our economy will be in total mess and we may need another MMS to bring it on track..God only can save my country

Really good idea, but they will not consult. Many years back, when Indira Gandhi was PM, there was some problem in foreign affairs and she did not find a better man for that job other than, then opposition leader Vajpayee and requested him to go and solve the problem and he willingly accepted and solved the problem.
