Mangaluru, Sep 19: In a surprising gesture, the thieves who had stolen 99 sovereigns of gold ornaments during the day when family members were away on Saturday September 16, returned all the stolen jewellery to the owners on Monday September 17. The incident occurred at a house near Marikamba temple, Adumaroli.

On Saturday, 99 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 13,000 in cash had been stolen during the afternoon hours when the couple residing in the house, Shekhar Kunder and his wife, Thilothama, were away on work. At 3 pm on Monday, two persons seated in a motor bike threw away a packet containing burgled gold ornaments along with a slip in which the thieves advised the family to keep the gold securely in bank locker.

Relatives of the couple, who were at home on Monday afternoon, heard the sound made by the throwing of a packet into the compound by bike-borne persons. By the time they opened the door to see what had fallen into the courtyard, the people on the motor bike had fled. They opened the packet and found all the ornaments stolen from the house kept in a plastic sachet and then covered by paper.

In a slip kept with the packet, the thieves confessed that they had committed a mistake by stealing gold. They have wondered as to why they kept so much jewellery in the house without keeping it in bank locker and asked them to exercise caution at least now. However, it is not yet known who had stolen the gold and why they returned the ornaments. Kankanady city station police personnel said that they have some leads about the motor bike riders.

Shekhar Kunder, a mechanic, and his wife, Thilothama, who works in mines and geology department, were away between 9.50 am and 1.20 pm on Saturday when the thieves had entered the house from the deserted rear side of the house and stolen jewellery. As the area was getting heavy rain then, people of neighbouring houses were inside their houmes, and the sound made by the rain perhaps muffled the sound made by the thieves, it is being surmised.
