Bengaluru: Drag-racing kills teenager, injures his 2 friends

Bengaluru, Sep 18 (DHNS): Drag-racing turned tragic for three minors as one of them was killed on the spot, while the other two sustained serious injuries on Saturday night.

The deceased is Arfan (16), while the injured are Srinivas (16) and Anirudh (16). They are being treated at a private hospital.

Arfan's father Saleem is a businessman, while Srinivas' father Govindaraju and Anirudh's father Krishnamurthy are IT professionals.

Arfan and Srinivas stayed with their parents at an apartment in Devarachikkanahalli, while Anirudh is a resident of HSR Layout. The trio are I PU students in separate private colleges, police said.

The police have arrested Anirudh and Srinivas for reckless driving. Govindaraju and Krishnamurthy have been held for allowing the teenagers to drive the cars.

They drove the cars up and down the elevated flyover in Electronics City. They reached Rupena Agrahara around 2.45 am, minutes before the accident, police said.

"Srinivas was driving the Toyota Innova in the middle of the road, while towards his left Arfan was driving a Skoda. Anirudh was driving a Swift Dezire on Srinivas' right side," said a senior police officer.

All the three cars were moving at a speed of over 160 kmph. Srinivas lost balance and his vehicle collided with the Skoda and Swift Dezire. Arfan was killed on the spot due to serious injuries.

One of the cars jumped to the other side of the road median due to the impact the accident. It crashed into a mini goods vehicle coming from the opposite direction. Later, it toppled, police said. The goods vehicle driver abandoned the vehicle and fled.

The Madivala traffic police have registered a case under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304 A (causing death by negligence) 109 (abetment) and Sections 189 (racing and trials of speed) and 180 (allowing unauthorised persons to drive vehicles) of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act.

Why only two parents arrested? The father of Arfan also needs to be arrested as he too is in the wrong having given a skoda to a 16yr old boy to drive. All the three fathers along the two sons who have survived in the accident need to be behind bars for putting the other innocent citizens lives and their own lives in danger.

You dont know if the father of the deceased allowed his son to drive. Maybe he stole the keys. And then again, even if he did allow it, he just lost his son, so there should be a period of mourning to grieve his son's death before he can be arrested. Where is your humanity

Roads not safe anymore because of stupid people such as these.

Just reached home after witnessing an accident. A scorpio and an access collided at a crossing. Both instantly off to blaming each other. The innocent bystander could see both were at fault. Who wouldn't have the brains to realise the importance of slowing down at junctions.

Such a pity that the roads are not safe for the common man.

Lack of cops on road can lead to lot of crimes. The drag races are happening off Brigade road every Sat/Sunday morning. The public is aware and also is the police , but son's are of politicians betting on the races.... If cops question, they are transferred to a godforsaken place.

Parents Must check on their kids on rye use of vehicle be it 2 wheeler or fout wheeler. Unless thr kids donot have valid DL, they should not be allowed even to test drive the vehicle. Now a days we see many traffic violations including wrong entry in one way traffic by ladies gents of all ages and all rwligious followers. Traffic rules are meant for our own safety. Follow them. Life is precious. In this kind of reckless driving the driver puts not just his life in danger but also others life at risk.

These kind of accidents, first hold the parents arrested as they give their children these comforts. Again ensure cars are impounded. Only then will parents know if their kids really require cars or bikes to go to school or college. Seize their mobile phones. They can use it only at home. No pocket money accept on weekends. We never got comforts during our school and college days. All our parents told us was that you grow up finish your degree, get a job and know the hardships of life. Hope this is an eye-opener. It's happening regularly among people who want to stay at par with the rich people.
