Mangaluru/Kasargod, Sep 17: Heavy rains continued to lash coastal Karnataka and north Kerala on Sunday September 17 and more rain is expected in the next 72 hours. As a precautionary measure, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Dr K G Jagadeesh has issued an alert, while in Kerala, the government has declared a holiday on Monday September 18.

DC Jagadeesha has instructed all tahsildars and government officials in the district to be alert and be available without fail. The officials have been instructed to identify low lying areas and take necessary action.

The DC has directed the education officers to declare holiday for schools and colleges if the situation demands.

In Kerala, the state general education secretary has declared holiday for all educational institutions including professional colleges in the state on Monday in the wake of heavy rains. Accordingly, all schools and colleges in Kasargod will be shut.

The Mahatma Gandhi University and Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) have postponed all the examinations scheduled for Monday.

Heavy rain lashed Kerala on Sunday causing widspread damage, landslip and waterlogging in various parts.

The meteorological department has have forecast very heavy rainfall in few places of Kerala and heavy showers in Lakshadweep for two days.
