Bengaluru: Forum formed to fight against Gauri's murder, mega rally on Tuesday

Bengaluru, Sep 11 (DHNS): A forum of progressive thinkers, writers, social activists, artistes and intellectuals has been formed to fight against the assassination of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh.

The forum named as ‘Gauri Lankesh Hathya Virodhi Horata Vedike’ comprises representatives from various walks of life from across the country.

The Vedike has decided to hold a national-level ‘resistance convention’ to condemn the murder, on September 12 at Central College grounds in Bengaluru. About 50,000 people, including religious heads of various sects and progressive seers will participate.

A procession would be taken out from Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station, which will culminate into a rally at the Central College grounds.

P Sainath, Teesta Setalvad, Sagarika Ghose, Anand Patwardhan, Prashant Bhushan, Medha Patkar, Kavita Krishnan and Prakash Rai are among those who will take part in the rally.

There would be songs, street plays, screening of short films and paintings and music concerts expressing resistance against the assassination.

“We want to resist efforts to silence dissent in the country. We want to show that Gauri’s murder hasn’t shaken us and we are committed against communalism, fundamentalism, fascism and extremism,” writer Prof K Marulasiddappa told reporters here on Sunday.

Gauri’s assassination was similar to those of Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and M M Kalburgi. She always opposed rightist ideology. The RSS regularly targeted all the four. In this context, needle of suspicion points towards communal forces, he said.

Prof Chandrashekhar Patil said the Vedike did not directly point fingers at any one individual or organisation. “Gauri was facing threats from communal organisations, which forces us to conclude that communal forces claimed her. However, the investigation should bring out the truth,” he said.

Regarding the ongoing investigation, they said they had faith in the SIT and were open for a Supreme Court-monitored probe at a later stage.

On Naxalite angle to the murder, Prof Patil said the Vedike members did not get any confirmation from any police source regarding involvement of naxals.

“Kalburgi’s murder did not get much publicity as it was the first such murder in the state. The government itself was shocked after Gauri’s murder and took up the issue with all seriousness,” he said.

Writer and former minister B T Lalitha Naik said, “Gauri’s father the late P Lankesh used extremely harsh words while criticising a person or an ideology. But, nobody dared to kill him. The British tolerated Mahatma Gandhi for about 50 years. It was extremely easy for them to eliminate him. Those who claimed Gauri are heinous than the British,” she said.

As Bengaluru editor Gauri Lankesh was murdered on September 5, 2017, 142 attacks against journalists for “grievous hurt” were registered nationwide over two years to 2015, according to the latest available National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.

I would like to request forum to release letter to Human right organisations, Amnesty International, United Nation, World journalism forum,Reporters Without Borders (RSF), to address the issue related to Indian journalism.
The murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh shows India descending into violence.India is at the 13th spot with seven such instances, or 0.006 unsolved journalist murders per one million inhabitants, according to the report of Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).46% of Indian journalists killed on duty were covering politics.
Of 142 cases registered, 114 were reported in 2014 and 28 in 2015.

Uttar Pradesh (UP) registered the most cases (64) over two years but only four persons have been arrested. UP was followed by Madhya Pradesh (26) and Bihar (22). The three states accounted for 79% of all cases registered across the country. Madhya Pradesh reported the most arrests (42): 10 in 2014 and 32 in 2015.
India was ranked 136 of 180 countries in the 2017 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders (RWB), an advocacy.
“Journalists are increasingly the targets of online smear campaigns by the most radical nationalists who vilify them and even threaten physical reprisals….journalists working for local media outlets are often the targets of violence by soldiers acting with the central government’s tacit consent,” RWB said in the report.

It's clearly shows your intellectual level and thinking.
There is no doubt someone planned and killed her just 2 days before the infamous illegal bike rally.
Someone killed her because someone doesn't like what she speaks and what she print on her news paper.
We all know what she spoke and what she print and probably she might had something more interesting information about the bike rally so they eliminate her prior to the news blast.
So why you are talking about political leaders?
The news here is about a forum formed irrespective of people and irrespective of politics.

Is she so important? Why there was no forum formed or no mega rallies against the minor kids being raped & killed in Colleges, Schools & on streets?

Why there is no forum or if not mega, a minor rally to solve the rain related problems in Babgalore city which is affecting Lakhs of people?

Why no rallies or forums formed by these journalists when our soldiers are being killed at the borders?

    They are not human beings?

By the way, journalists are not Saints.

They are also human beings, they also do mistakes as like us, but nobody there to expose these fake fraud corrupt media Journalists.

Murder is a crime irrespective of who does it

Khangress dint give a state funeral to PV Narasimha Rao our ex PM. But gave it to this convict. SHe is a convict who was on bail and indicted by the court. Only filth and hatred came out of her mouth. Irony is that she was free to vent out her venom thorgh her words or paper, or her social media and presstitutes and award wapsi gang calls it freedom of expression, butwhen right used to hit back with same words through social media against her, shameless Sidhu govt booked case against them and fit them into this Murder.

I am happy Modi din't care about this incedent nor did he condolences this incedent . She does not deserve this from a man whom she has been defaming and spewing venom throughout her carrier. That's what kept her business running by Modi bashing. Who was her helping hand!, No doubt.

I sympathize d with Kalaburgi or Pansare, Dabolkar incedent, but this one...HELL NO. I think it's Karma. Live by the sword....

..it looks like MODI hate gang than Hatya virodhi gang..HM said ideology issue is diverting tactics by culprits, Kharghe back peddling on right wing involvment (may be they knows truth) but these intellectuals hell bound on MODI..look at some of the names ' Teesta Setalvad, Sagarika Ghose, Prashant Bhushan, Medha Patkar'..if these people allowed to target Right wing org even before preliminary investigation, there is every chance that case go KALBURGI way..if caught it will be end, if not then can use for political mileage..

I am surprised why these people kept their silence when Sharath Madivala was murdered in broad day-light time??? “Aap Mare Tho Devta….Aur Hum Mare Tho Shaitaan”???
