Udupi, Sep 10: Sports and youth affairs minister Pramod Madhwaraj on Sunday, September 10, laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new city bus stand for KSRTC JNURM buses. The new bus stand will be completed within a year.

Addressing the gathering, he said, “There was a major opposition for the introduction of KSRTC buses in the city. Private bus owners tried their best to stop the service of JNURM buses. Private buses will run only on those routes which are profitable for them. But Gopal Poojary and I have tried our best to introduce KSRTC buses here. A well planned bus stand for JNURM busses will be ready for use within a year. Bus stands in Udupi, Manipal and Malpe will also be constructed soon."

Gopal Poojary, KSRTC president and MLA of Byndoor said, “This is a huge gift given by KSRTC to Udupi district. JNURM buses are very helpful for the poor people as well as for students and senior citizens. Soon a bus stand and depot will be constructed in Karkala, and Udupi will be made a division.”

Structure of the new bus stand

The new bus stand will be a three-storey building. At one go, 10 buses can be parked inside the stand. Parking space will be provided on the ground floor for vehicles. The second floor is a bus stand. The third floor will have nine commercial shops. Pure drinking water facility and toilets will also be provided. The building also includes rest rooms for KSRTC staff. The new bus stand will be constructed in a total area of 41 cents.

Currently, 40 buses are plying in Udupi on various routes. More buses are also expected to arrive soon. Permits are allotted for around 60 buses. In Mangaluru, 11 new Volvo buses have been allotted to Mangaluru - Bengaluru and Mangaluru – Pune routes.

The state government has also allotted Rs 10 crore for building bus stands in Malpe and Manipal as well as for Udupi city bus stand to be upgraded. In Bannanje, a new bus stop for inter-district buses will be constructed soon.

M A Gaffur, president, Minorities Development Commission; Dinakar Babu, president, zilla panchayat; Sheela K Shetty, vice president, Udupi zilla panchayat; Janardhan Tonse, opposition leader; Meenakshi Bannanje, president, Udupi CMC; Sandhya Shobha Kakkunje, vice president; Sudheer, president, standing committee; director of KSRTC Mangaluru and other officials of KSRTC were present at the function.

Harold, in the city area they managed 41 cents land where toilets and few commercial shops included. Land is a big scarcity in any matured city. You can not shift such bus stand out of city for a bigger land. With wise management this place can be effective. Congratulations to Pramod for making it possible fighting with private bus lobby. There are others only focusing on communal lines, ether chalo...udhar chalo type and cow politics.

Request to minister is to START LUXURY BUSES TO AIRPORT ATLEAST FEW BUSES IN THE PEAK FLIGHT TIMING. IT SHOULD START FROM MANIPAL-UDUPI-KATAPADY-KAUP-MULKY -BAJPE. It could be a great benefit to airport commuters and could be a profitable business like fly buses from Mysore to Bangalore Airport.

This is the rarest of rare cases where JNURM bus stand was constructed in 41 cents of land. Now the buses need to wait in the main road to enter the bus stand, Thank gosh they did not construct the bus stand in some remote area where more land was available and there would not have been any people to board the bus.

Good public service by Madhwaraj and Gopal Poojari.
I hope both will be able to have an international airport at Udupi district as well, since ML airport is not viable for future growth.

I don't think an international airport at Udupi or extension of the runway at Mangalore airport is possible in near future as they have already made survey and they want to wait until the passenger traffic is increased from 2 mn passengers to 5 mn in 2030. That means such a small state like Kerala with 4 international airports has 20 mn passengers now. Karnataka with so many industries & institutions even though it's big has one full fledged international airport & then other regional international airport. I agree that Kerala has lots of people in the gulf compared to Karnataka, but I don't think it's 7:20 when compared to the latter. Mr. Gopal Poojari is doing a good work as seen often in the news implementing various projects. He can be compared to previous airport director Mr. Vasudev who used to be seen often in the field implementing various projects. The mentality in India is such that chairman, president, director & other top management people only sit in a/c cabin & they have a office boy who does all the work & the latter has some influence in official matters. Here the top management does't get much benefit when compared to the lower management & staff & their salary is slightly more than the one below them. I have seen some companies with less than 5 staff and each of them are either chairman's, presidents or managing director's & all of them even share the lower end job like cleaning, opening the main door, tidying up , preparing tee/coffee etc.,

    Why wait till 2030?

We have so much potential to increase all kind of tourism activities, including health tourism, trade, real estate, education etc. like no other distric in K'taka.
Apart from Gulf NRIs, little tourism, Kerala brings in more people by road, air and rail.
We need a master plan for Coastal region, that will help us exploit our full potential, surpassing tiny place like Kerala, and even Bangalore, if we unite, and bring out policies that will boost our economic conditions.
We also have prominent Billionaire NRIs from Coastal region, Billionaire Nilekani from Uttara Kannada, and so many multi millionaires representing Coastal region scattered all over India and abroad.
I would also suggest that the land required for a truly global scale air port must be earmarked right away in Udupi district itself, which will make the work easy, no matter how soon or later we are able to achieve the target air travellers.
We need to have high class roads that connect various districts of Ktaka, especially Uttara Kannada, neighboring districts, so that air travelers will increase by means of trade, tourism etc.
We need to provide local (coastal) and in land tourism that will be boost air travel as well.
When the necessary infrastructure is put in place, all forms of travel, tourism, commerce will get automatic boost creating much needed job opportunities for locals in every sector.
Right now, Coastal region lacks strong leaders that can lobby for us, like the types you find especially from Kerala, TN and other states of India???
We need high class infrastructure first.

    Jai Hind!!

The concept of bus stand in Udupi is good. The new bus stand will be constructed in a total area of 41 cents and the cost is 10 crores and 3 storyed building.

There is no vision here. At least the area of the bus stand should spread minimum one acre of land. This is not auto riksha stand but bus stand for KSRTC JNURM buses.

Major construction like new bus stands and Goverment offices should be moved to subarb on larger piece of Land, Larger vehicles like Volvo buses and commercial vehicles should be prevented from old City area.
