Digvijaya retweets abusive meme against Modi; BJP demands public apology

New Delhi, Sep 8 (PTI): The BJP on Friday lashed out at senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh for posting a tweet that used insulting language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying opposition leaders like him have "degenerated into abusive trolls" after repeated electoral drubbings.

The saffron party sought an apology from the Congress.

"Singh's crass comments demonstrate the degeneration of a party that prides itself on a great legacy. These comments amount to insulting 130 crore people of India whose mandate is vested in the prime minister," BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said.

"The Congress will have to publicly apologise for the filthy abuse of its front-ranking leaders who in the wake of repeated electoral drubbings have degenerated into abusive trolls on the social media," he said.

After facing flak, Singh tried to distance himself from the tweet, saying retweets are not endorsements.

"I have said it is not mine. I have disowned it. I have not used those words," he clarified, adding that "my tweet does not endorse this".

He added that "my words are that he is the best in the 'art of fooling'. Is it abusive?"

Asked whether he endorsed what he retweeted, he said, the same had been sent to him by someone and he only retweeted it.

"I have said that this is not mine. But, could not help it."

"Not mine but couldn't help posting it. My apologies to the person concerned. He is the best in the "Art of Fooling!"," he said while posting a picture of Modi with the offensive tweet.

When a person's frustration reaches end point, he behaves like this.

This reflects the state of Congress in India. Majority of people are ignoring Congress. None of their tactics to gain attention of people gave any positive results.
They are losing Ground in each and every state.

So like a coward they are trying to defame Modiji. Anyways it has already back fired and crated lots of sympathy for PM.

    Thanks Mr.Frustrated Diggi

Every party seems to have a rep who will put his foot in his mouth and today's news media & social media gives them plenty of opportunity. Digvijay Singh is an accomplished leader in the Congress party for foot-in-mouth and dirty talk. But today he remains relevant in his party only because of that and continues to dig his political grave.

There was no need for a person of Digvijaya's stature to tweet using derogatory language. I am sure he and/or his advisers have enough vocabulary to make strong, scathing as well as catchy criticisms against PM or any political opponents using CIVILIZED language. The Congress party must strongly condemn, disown and distance itself from derogatory language used by any of its members. In a democracy political discourse among leaders must not be allowed to stoop low either by the ruling party or the opposition.
Similarly a very shameful hate comment made by a citizen Nikhil Dadhich against Gauri Lankesh after she was killed should have been publicly condemned personally by PM Modi especially since he follows him on twitter. Would such persons be encouraged and emboldened to make such hate comments again and again in other situations if the PM remains silent ? Would PM's silence be considered as tacit approval ? These questions need to be asked of the BJP leadership. Yes PM is not responsible for Nikhil's tweet but as PM who follows him on twitter would it not be his duty as a public leader of the nation to publicly condemn such deeply disturbing hate comments ? Would not criticizing Nikhil Dadhich's tweet publicly be considered as a serious act of omission and sending the wrong message by the PM ?

    Our PM is a gentleman..
He takes along al the people with him, be it be from any political party or apolitical individual..
He is PM for Dadhichi as well as he is PM for Digvijay
He is PM for Declan as well as he is PM for RSRB..
Can parent ditch a child just because it is playing prank?

For example, Digvijay used abusive language, but PM Modi is still follower of Digvijay , it does not mean PM Mdi endorsed the filthy language of Digvijay....

Remember that twitter can not be used for issuing character certificate...

From your reply it seems one has been hasty to reply without properly reading and understanding my comment. All what you have commented was already taken into consideration/factored in when I made my comment.
Nobody is seeking character certificate from a leader but abstaining from criticizing and remaining silent to wrong doings or looking the other way is the sign of a weak leader who mostly preaches without practicing according to right thinking people.
Silence by a leader to wrongful acts by others is more often than not construed as approval which will only encourage the person to commit such acts/utterances again and again.
I don't wish to argue or deliberate on this further. Believe what you like, this is a free country.

Did PM tweet on sad demise of Madivala?
Did PM tweet on sad demise of Poojari?
Did PM tweet on sad demise of any Hindu killed by Sickular forces?

Why you are not angry when he did not tweet on earlier murders?
You mean "Hindu life is not a life. Only sickulars have life"
Please come out of this viewpoint and change yourself as everyone including Hindu has life and covered under Human Rights..

Modi has been called out several times for following abusive Twitter handles, most recently after the murder of Gauri Lankesh, but he doesn’t seem to care.

Modi was called out for following violent handles. He continues to follow more than a dozen handles that are trolls and, going by Malaviya’s statement, is absolutely obstinate in his determination to keep following them. Modi earlier held a tea party with his troll army at the prime minister’s official residence and the 150 invitees got photographs taken with him and used it as their display pictures.

However, Modi unfollowed Jwala Gurunath, a staunch supporter, when she complained to him repeatedly on Twitter that she was allegedly sexually harassed by Tajinder Bagga, who has now been made a BJP spokesman. Bagga was earlier caught on camera assaulting the well-known public interest lawyer Prashant Bhushan. Bagga is, of course, followed by Modi.

Can we call ourselves a democracy when the party in power and the government, including the prime minister, are accomplices in this kind of vile abuse and intimidation of citizens?

Modi is reportedly obsessed with social media and in reply to an RTI petition, the prime minister’s office said that he managed both his Twitter handles himself. So brace yourself, Modi is determined to keep bestowing his “blessings” on trolls and it’s going to get even uglier in the run up to the general elections.

Now BJP taking beating due to its association with abusive troll army it wanted to drag Digvijaya Singh to defuse and divert the attention.

Whereas General Narendra Modi and his troll army continued to abusive those who object its way of working.

This is unbecoming of a senior leader in polity...
Don"t show your desperation at our nation"s PM so loosely...
This is intolerance... And I oppose it and reject it...

There is no society free of intolerance...
There was none... None will be there in future...
Intolerance is like pests... Can only be controlled by law...
It can never be eradicated so long as human lives on this planet with other beings...
Be them living or non living...
