Mangaluru: Traffic congestion at Padil, Nanthoor - Persisting headache for commuters

Daijworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Aug 23: Commuters travelling on Padil and Nanthoor road have to face traffic congestion on a daily basis. Motorists have been bearing the brunt of traffic snarls from the past several years.

A long trail of vehicles waiting to clear a stretch of one kilometer is a daily scene at Padil and Nanthoor. Commuters suffer more headache at Nanthoor junction as it is a four-way-traffic junction which leads to chaos. Wednesday August 23 was no diffferent as scores of vehicles were stuck in a gridlock that took considerable time to clear.

Pathetic condition of roads

One of the main reasons for these unending traffic jams is the pathetic condition of roads at Padil and Nanthoor. The situation at Padil became worse after the work on the railway underpass work commenced a few years ago. Passengers and motorists spend several hours in the congestion before they reach the two-lane road, 100 meters beyond the railway bridge at Padil.

Traffic congestion problems look to continue day and night at Padil as the long awaited railway underpass on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru highway is still in progress. The underpass once completed would facilitate the smooth functioning of the traffic and eliminate the perpetual traffic at the existing two-lane underpass.

Nightmare for motorists

The roads leading to Padil and Nanthoor are very dangerous and unsafe for motorists. It would be nightmare for commuters in the monsoon when the soil would wear away, flow down to the road and make the road mucky. During the monsoon, the crater like potholes gets filled and subsequently turns into a sea of muck. This condition throws the traffic out of gear and forces pedestrians to wade through sludge and sewage.

Even the highway patrol vehicles monitoring these areas remain helpless. Due to the pathetic road condition, there is slow vehicular movement in both Padil and Nanthoor.

From past one year, several protests have been held over road issues. While appreciating the social concern of the protesters, the quality of NHAI officials needs to be deplored.

From past several months, local MPs and MLAs have inaugurated or laid foundation for several concreted roads in Mangaluru spending crores of rupees. Even though these traffic congestions irk the passengers, officials from the public works department have shown least concern to repair the dilapidated road in these areas.

"NHAI has to take initiative"

Speaking to daijiworld, traffic ACP Tilakchandra said, "Traffic congestion at Padil and Nanthoor has been a constant problem. Vehicular movement is dead slow in these areas. We deploy at least 5-6 police personnel in these areas. We have brought this to the notice of NHAI officials several times. They have to repair the roads at least on temporary basis. If NHAI takes up the initiative of repairing the roads, the situation will definitely improve. The traffic congestion at Padil and Nanthoor can be resolved."

NHAI, if they have a will can 100% have a flyover in Nanthoor. We have so many inteligent people in South of India. Why someone from North has a say we cannot.

Dear all, the main problem at Nanthoor junction is the big circle. If we remove the circle and plan for signal lights, traffic congestion shall be eased. for this I had complained to ACP traffic two years back and got the reply that once flyover is completed by NHAI, this will be solved and now its more than two years. pathetic planning. I don't know who planned for such a big circle.

Mangalore to Surathkal is a treacherous journey . full of pot holes and some times mini lakes.

I mean... what our elected representatives doing? or may be their big car tyres just glide over the pot holes. I suffer daily hoping "may be tomorrow they will fill pot holes" of this toll road. mind you it is a TOLL road. and people pay 70 rupee for up/down journey.

Not to bring political angle, some years back at least there used to be repairs during rainy season but now not even that is happening. but so called achche din gauranteed govt is not doing anything?

due to this bad road my car suspension is gone and repair cost is coming close to 10-15K at least. My age old parents find it very difficult to travel between Mangalore and Surathkal thanks to very bumpy ride.

Those facebook worriers who talk about Modi, so much more KMs of roads constructed etc etc ... what are they doing?

I was born in Bikernakatte-Nanthur, grew up till my high school days. I was a little boy when the Bombay Kanyakumari road was constructed passing through Pump Well - Nanthur -- onwards to Panaji-Bombay. Then, the State highway was joining the National Highway (then NH17) at Pump Well (via Padil). Nanthur was free of any congestion. It should be that way because Nanthur-Bikernakatta-Kulshekar-Shaktinagar - all fall within the City Corporation Limit.

State Highway was re-routed from Padil via Bikernakatte-Nanthur junction? (of course many of our friends and us lost our houses for this stupid highway extension). You need at least 6 lane highway to avoid congestion at Nanthur cross + a Bridge or Tunnel - which is not practical because it is a city limit. The best is, if the State Government reverts to the old routing - i.e Padil-Pumpwell connection the Nanthur Junction can be saved from this unwanted discomfort for the residents. In Emergencies - no Ambulatory Service is possible. Please look at the accidental deaths that have taken place at this junction. Look at the lives of Police personnel getting roasted in the sun to manage this one junction. One needs at least 45 minutes to commute from Kaikamba to Nanthur junction either in the morning or in the evening. Can the Government Highway Department look seriously into this. There are solutions to all problems if mind is applied in the right direction.

While we people fight for religion RSS, PFI and other organizations, MP's & MLA's take a nap and earn money by awarding projects to their own relatives to get their hafta. It's time for people of DK to come out of religion in-differences and fight for the development of the state. Be it be Congress, BJP or someother party we need development. We have been cheated by the ministers all these 72 years of Independence. CM is only interested in development of Bangalore to Hassan by implementing Yettinhole, Netravati Nadi projects. Development of DK is last on his list, as DK is his vote bank. Come on guys mature enough and fight for our rights. DK has the best natural resources all over Karnataka, but it's pity that we enjoy only a slavery life for all these years, while natural resources are exploited for other districts benefit.
    Jai Hind.

As a daily commuter on this stretch of road, I want to cry out loudly to Mangalore! YOU ARE KILLING ME EVERYDAY MANGALORE... i hate this journey to my office only because of you. Is our system so pathetic that it cant even apply quality tar to come for years smoothly. I remember the road stretch at Hampankatta (from demolished Tower clock to AB Shetty Circle) in my school days. the british quality Tar road which easily bore the brunt of hundreds of heavy/ light vehicles plying on it day and night and still managed to remain A1 for years. Has our Tar got corrupted or become too independent after independence along the peoples mind?

Traffic commotions and congestions has virtually become a chronic disease all over the world, and therefore India is not an exception. The major problem in India is the growing population and also growing affluence where more and more vehicles are being purchased and utilized by millions, and obviously our existing narrow roads are flooded every passing day. India has been blessed with some of the fine planners and executors. But the Indian planners apparently did not render sufficient time and attention for roads fifty years ago. Instead more and more streets were created with shopping buildings, houses and much more. Now it is too difficult to change.

India needs firstly to broaden the existing roads. That task is tough in itself, because it takes time and effort to mobile the existing traffic commotions with consequent delays and frustrations. Once the road modifications are started the contractors have to speed up with the job, and if required coduct the work at night when the traffic is much lesser. This might cost some extra money but if that is the only solution, that solution need be soughted out. Some of the new and latest road construction automation also need be enforced and that also costs money, ad the tax payers have to pay one way or the other.

Our roads also need more traffic police to conduct traffic without the help of the traffic lights. That also costs money, but we can employ thousands of traffic police to supervise the ease of traffic.
The Mayors of each City have to work closely with the State Government as well as the Centtral Government about the concern of the people whose time is precious, and the time should be well utilized for the right purpose at the right time.

Coz they don't see the traffic bro.
When they(minister) come police ll escort them so they feel there is no issue.
Police should escort the common man not the politician coz v elect the politician.
They are working there coz of us they shouldn't forget from where they come coz once upon a time they were also common man.
If this is understood by them our country would have improved in a much better way.

It is very true. This has been a persisting problem to commuters all the time. However there is one Traffic warden ie. Francis Moras who along with Deenanath D'Sa are doing their best and this has been noticed by several motorists.

It is worthwhile encouraging more people to join the Traffic Wardens Squad.

A temporary solution can be found by opening the unfinished railway underpass after removing the scaffolding erected to finish concrete work before it was stopped to modify the same for another track to be added to Railway, which certainly proves Nalin Kumar failed to assess future plans while getting permission for the present work.
Finish the work which got permission & any modifications can be done after rains stop & new plan gets approved later, until then let motorists use the finished road & let the bottleneck be released. Red tapism is hurting many projects & more than that it puts people more at trouble than MPs who travel by air & present themselves at protests against local governments if they are not their own.

There is a simple rule to be followed while entering and exiting a "round about" (we call as traffic circles in India). The traffic to your right gets the right of way.
If you are entering a circle, you have to enter from left extreme lane if you want to take immediate left.
If you are taking second exit or third exit, then you have to enter the round about from second lane or third lane. Remember the traffic on your right gets the right. Only when there is no vehicle on your right you have to enter. Once entered into the round about traffic, as your exit comes, you have keep shifting to left extreme lane. Exiting directly from inner lanes is not allowed. If you do not make it to left extreme lane, before your exit comes, you have to keep circling till you get a chance to change the lane to left extreme.
This is internationally followed rule for negotiating round abouts. Traffic much more than the Nanthoor junction passes through round abouts abroad. Unfortunately our citizens are selfish and do not follow the rules even if they have driven under strict surveillance in places like Singapore.

You are absolutely right, when we are approaching the circle, the traffic at the right has the priority and we need to wait till the traffic gets cleared, i agree. But the Traffic at right never gets cleared at peak times. Now tell me who will follow the rule? the best solution is to remove circles and build flyovers.

During peak hours on an average it takes minimum 30 minutes to cross nathoor circle from mallikatte and about padil its takes more than 45 minutes to reach pumpwell from padil junction and the road condition is pathetic filled with deadly path holes. Hope concerned authorities will take necessary steps otherwise common people will start protesting out of daily travelling frustration. TWO wheeler rider have to take double care while there N number of deadly patholes specially in nathoor circle, bikarnakatte road, Padil pumpwell road and pumpwell kankanadi road is in worst condition.
