Railway minister Suresh Prabhu offers to quit over train accidents, PM Modi asks him to wait

New Delhi, Aug 23 (India Today): Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu today offered to resign taking moral responsibility of recent rail accidents in Uttar Pradesh. Suresh Prabhu, in a series of tweets, said he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi but was asked to wait before putting in papers.

"I met the Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking full moral responsibility. Hon'ble PM has asked me to wait. I am extremely pained by the unfortunate accidents, injuries to passengers and loss of precious lives. It has caused me deep anguish," Suresh Prabhu said.

"In less than three years as minister, I have devoted my blood and sweat for the betterment of the Railways. New India envisioned by PM deserves a railways which is efficient and modern. I promise that is the path, on which railways is progressing now," Prabhu said on Twitter.

"Under leadership of PM, tried to overcome decades of neglect through systemic reforms in all areas leading to unprecedented investment and milestones," the minister added.

The development came hours after Railway Board chairman Ashok Mittal submitted his resignation to Suresh Prabhu on a day when Indian Railways witnessed yet another accident in Uttar Pradesh. Nine bogies of Kaifiyat Express derailed in Auraiya district early today injuring over 70 people.

Last week, 22 people were killed and dozens injured when Haridwar-bound Kalinga-Utkal Express jumped off tracks in Khatauli in Muzaffaragar district. Top railway officials were suspended after this accident which according to initial probe occurred due to negligence of concerned officials.

Suresh Prabhu's three year tenure has been marred with numerous rail accidents.

A timeline of some of the big rail accidents in the last few years:

Mr. Suresh Prabhu is one of the very few ministers in the BJP government who is trying his best to do justice to the post he is holding. I had a lot of expectations from this minister but somehow he has not been able to live up to the faith I had in him. No doubt, he is trying his best but one has to concede that it is not an easy job to manage the railways considering the huge network it has and the large size of our county. But at least I am convinced that he is trying his best. He is far and away one of the best we have as a minister and the PM did a good job by not accepting his resignation. That is because he just doesn't have anybody worthwhile to fit into Suresh Prabhu's shoes. This reminds me of the late Lal Bahadur Shastri who resigned as the railway minister owning moral responsibility following a train accident. But Mr. Shastri was a class apart, one of the finest persons ever to have entered politics. Talking about him in the same breath as any present day politician would be like comparing chalk and cheese.

The Modi Sarkar will not take any action being corruption cases or Moral resposibility like in case of rail accidents or Gorakpur incident. If he decides to make people accountable and dismiss them, then it will lead to a chain reaction and so discretion is better part of valour of his 56" chest

Indian Railways, being a Govt. of India undertaking, is beset with numerous problems at various levels, just like other PSUs such as Air India, BSNL etc., which are huge 'White Elephants' known for their inefficiency and bleeding our economy to death.

In any case, there is not much even an efficient/sincere/hard workikng Rail Minister like Suresh Prabhu can do to stem the rot in our system.

Indian Railways will not only have to improve its basic infrastructure, improve safety measures and staff efficiency, but also fix strict accountability/punishment for those staff found guilty of negligence/inefficiency.

Planning to invest heavily in "Bullet trains" would be the most unwise strategy, unless the basic lacunae/systemic failures are set right.

I fear you will be disappointed....
    Just read this WhatsApp joke..

Modi, walked into a bar around 9:58 pm. He sat down next to Rahul at the bar and stared up at the TV.

The 10 pm news was coming on. The news crew was covering the story of a man on the ledge of a large building preparing to jump.

Rahul looked at Modi and said, "Do you think he will jump ?"

Modi said, "You know, I bet he will jump."

Rahul replied, "Well, I bet he won't."

Modi placed Rs. 1000 on the bar and said, "You're on !"

Just as Rahul placed his money on the bar, the guy on the ledge jumped off the building, falling to his death.

Rahul was very upset, but willingly handed his Rs.1000 to Modi, saying, "Fair is fair. Here's your money."

Modi replied, "I can't take your money. I saw this earlier on the 5 pm news, and so I knew he would jump."

Rahul replied, "I did too, but didn't think he would do it again.

This time Modi took the money.

    😂😂😜😜

He wants to step down because he is confidant that he can prove innocent beyond doubt and be acquitted easily. Whereas, Yogi is not even whispering about offering his resignation, in fact he is firing other innocent people around him to shield himself and staying in power to influence the ongoing investigation with his state and political power. If he resigns he will be proved immediately beyond doubt guilty as charged along with other 40 chors starting from Delhi throne.

Drama resignation. Using tragedy to manipulate and get public sympathy and then show 56" as a strong leader for taking action. This is to cover up apathy and negligience and divert public attention. Wait, next they will find some way to turn this around and blame the Congress party. That is all the BJPee does hence they are unable to produce positive results.

Mr. Suresh Prabhu is one of the Best performing Minister in PM Modi's cabinet. He is indeed working really hard and I believe him when he says he has given his blood and sweat for Railways. He has done tremendous work in modernizing the fleet and making the Indian Railways more safer by introducing and implementing various safety measures. There is no need for him to resign over these accidents of which he as a minister is not at all responsible for these accidents. It is unfortunate that someone from the department did not do his/her duty so the accident happened. Its important to rectify these human error from happening again and take effective measures to mitigate the risk in future.

Correct. Replacing Sri. Sadananda Gowda as if the current Suresh Prabhu will change everything in 100 days. Suresh Prabhu said that it takes $ 500 billion to revamp the Indian Railway, went around and to the foreign lands to get investors with 100% ownership. What a big dreamer, foreigners investing in the dilapidated Indian Railway. PM Modi may take that portfolio too, else Smriti Irani will handle Railway too.

Nitish Kumar also resigned as Railway Minister when there was a train accident in 2000 owning moral responsibility. Suresh Prabhu's offer to resign indicates his sincerity. Train accidents had happened during the tenures of Mamta and Lalu also but they were least bothered of resignation except shedding crocodile tears, since railways to these people is a money minting portfolio, where loss of lives don't matter.
