Mangaluru Aug 23: At a meeting held here on Tuesday August 22, the district administration gave its nod for widening of the national highway between the city and Karkala into a four-lane road with a width of 45 metres. At the same time, it has suggested some changes in the draft map of the road.

The meeting was held in the office of the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district. It was presided over by district in-charge minister, B Ramanath Rai. After holding detailed discussions, approval was given to the plan of the highway with certain modifications to the draft.

Project director of National Highways Authority of India, S P Somashekhar, displayed the revised map of the proposed road, duly recommending under bridges at ten spots, over bridge at one spot and two huge over bridges at Moodbidri and Kaikamba. He also informed that some changes for the convenience of general public had been made in the proposed road at places like Sanoor, Thodar, Mrattangady, Mijar, Kudupu and Yedapadavu in the light of objections raised in the previous meeting on the subject. There will be two bypass roads, one at Gurpur and another at Moodbidri. A spacious bridge across Gurpur river is also proposed.

He said that for the 45-km road between the city and Karkala, an investment of Rs 1,000 crore might be required, taking into account various under bridges, over bridges and other works. He said that for every kilometre of road, Rs 20 crore will be spent. If everything goes as per plan, works on the road might begin in about six months, he revealed. He said that road map has been modified for the third time in view of objections received, to suit public convenience. "The revised plan ensures that areas that are densely populated are not affected. The current one would probably be the final phase of modifications. As soon as we get approval from the deputy commissioner of the district, we will publish preliminary notification. Later, joint spot inspection will be conducted, following which land acquisition process will begin," he explained.

The current initiative of building national highway on this route is in place of the plan to widen the road that had been conceived in 2009. There are certain problems to widen the current road itself into national highway. The current plan has been envisaged, taking into account future needs of 30 to 40 years. Therefore, sections of the current road will be converted into national highway, and in the other places the road will newly laid, he stated.

As per vehicular census, hundreds of vehicles use this road every hour, and the current plan enables vehicles to cover the distance of 45 km in an hour. After the draft sketch is approved, revenue department and highways authority will conduct joint survey. If during this inspection it is found absolutely necessary, there is provision to make certain changes, he said.

People's representatives, politicians, entrepreneurs, and people owning landed property on the stretch through which the proposed road will be laid, participated in the meeting. Some urged to make further changes in the sketch. Minister, Ramanath Rai, said that the general public have the option to file objections to the plan even after official notification is issued about the national highway.

MLA, J R Lobo, city mayor, Kavita Sanil, deputy commissioner of the district, Dr K G Jagadeesha, additional deputy commissioner, Kumar, and zilla panchayat chief executive officer, Dr M R Ravi were present.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of D. K
I was once proud of dakshina kannada...but now I am feeling pity for my birth land. We all want development in all sections of society. We wish to live in peace, care for the each other in society and consider ourselves brothers by putting our differences aside. But now for past 10 year's all I see, hear and read only hatred among ourselves. Violence and clashes in main stream media and in social media being put forth by ourselves..our people. I have seen the development among people in India, but not in dakshina kannada. I personally have not seen any schmes by both so called parties ( CONGRESS/BJP/OTHERS) which benefitted or led to development of our society in the past 15 years when they were in power. I have seen rich individuals and corrupt people getting richer. I have also seen innocent children of Hindi, Muslim and Christian dying, not because of poverty but due to arrogance. I have seen powerful and influential people propogating hatred among brothers for them to exploit. I am drawn to desperation when I was helpless for the people in need at that time who would have been probably alive today if we all consider ourselves equality in society.
But this is not the end and I am not done.... One day again there will again come a time when we all unite irrespective of religion or views and lead our society towards greater heights putting our differences aside. I urge everyone just don't follow other ideologistic propaganda make your own idea and choose rightfully. Make the right decision for ourselves and others considering a value of life

Representatives of Central Govt. are experts of fire spitting ( may be they are playing circus characters rather than Elected MPs of the region) One MP want to fire entire DK another to Whole State, Where does they have time to listen public grievances...? Hence the credit goes to the working people of the region.

Nanthoor Bridge work should be given first priority and rest of the projects can be completed later. Everyday i can see 3 to 4 traffic police are struggling through out the day to handle to heavy traffic and even if they are missing for a minute the traffic gets worse here...and after 9PM there is nobody to handle traffic during this time there is a high chance of accidents this circle is becoming MOST dangerous junction in entire manglore city. People around nanthoor should give wakeup call to concerned authority.

The current rood condition is so pathetic , they want to build a new road? why do we pay road tax for pot holes?

Also the current proposed highway is biased, road is to be widened on two sides , but why is it done on one side affecting a lot of people .

Land owners affected by this are many because of certain benefit to certain section of the community.

This messy corrupt activity and corruption will never end.

is there any plan to fix the current roads in mangalore ?

and small suggestion , can it be a state highway , some bars will be saved.

NHAI should note that the wuslity of works conducted on highway between Kundapur and Mangalore is substandard work. Just aftet one rainy season the top layer is giving off. Most places dont have drains nor adequate slope is provided for directing rain water. Most importantly absolute substandard paint has been used for white markings which is not visible at night. The contracted has scammed in this department and astonishingly they have been allowed to collect toll.

The demand for 4 lane Moodbidri to Mangaluru road was long time pending project & still at initial stage. This road is Zig zag road & if you wait for public opinion or approval to widen road or develop the curves/turns... it will take around 50 years more to complete the project.

Of course, there will be people around, who are interested in making 'Ungli' in any such development work. So, timeline for the project seems infinite !

I wonder are the jally ( rock stone ) they are going to use is of gold plated ?, this is how they swindle public money and money goes to everyone's pocket from top to bottom !. then after spending this much money, see the conditions of the road in a year or two.

Lets talk something sensible why to always talk about politicians and them making money, why can't this be thought in the lines of development and the benefits what the people would be getting. Currently every one travelling from Karkala via Moodbidri would be knowing the pain they facing on that curvy road with always a thought that an accident would be met at the next curve.
Also think on the development of the area which would result bcoz of this proposed 4 lane. There might be problems which some people whose land would get affected bcoz of this extension, but on a whole majority of the local people would be benefited by new business flowing in due to the development.

For IT companies, factories and other industries to come into the city and work you need to provide them infra structure.
Mangalore is an educational hub and the quality of people produced by Mangalore can be seen in all top companies in India as well as worldwide. The main problem is, we are not able to retain this talent in Mangalore since there are no employment opportunities in Mangalore and to create employment opportunities you need to have IT companies or other industries to develop in the vicinity for which infrastructure development become necessary.

no where I could see the time line or I missed it... By seeing the pumpwell and thokkottu works going on... it must be at least 2030 / 2040 by when we can expect ( if at all it completes ) . Benchmark is the Surathkal flyover which was just 1/ 2 KMs straight lifted flyover... which took around 9 years to complete ... that's the time line we work with... so... many of the officials may not be there also alive to question back them....

Why do they always think of widening roads that pass through destroying densely populated areas. And to say that 45m four lane road will be enough for40 years is utter foolishness. Instead make a road on the outskirts, plan for 80-120M wide and it may be enough for the next 20- 40 years.
People living alongside nanthoor to Gurpur will have absolutely no peace and there will be hundereds of accidents because people will have to commute long distances to make U turns and will prefer to come on the wrong side as it is happening in panambur to surathkal sections and padil to BC road.
I think people in other Districts are more smarter because they all have bypass roads but here Mangalore is cut by highways and all the people can think of is flyover and underpass.
