Bengaluru, Aug 22: A senior health inspector of the Indira Canteen located at Subrahmanyanagara ward in the city has been suspended for dereliction of duty.

City mayor, G Padmavati, said in her letter to the corporation commissioner that the employee is guilty of dereliction of duty in not arranging to provide breakfast to the people.

As there were numerous complaints about not providing breakfast properly in the government's ambitious Indira Canteens, the mayor wanted to check these complaints personally.

When she went to the Indira Canteen at Subrahmanyanagara on Monday. Murthy, who was in charge of the canteen, had not arranged to provide breakfast to visitors. Instead, he had hung a board that said that the canteen was closed.

The mayor got angry at this, and took the health inspector severely to task. Murthy tried to explain that it was not possible to distribute breakfast on account of shortage of drinking water. At this, Padmavati called up minister for Bengaluru development, K J George, and told him what had happened. As desired by him, she also passed instructions to suspend Murthy.

She then visited four more Indira Canteens and personally verified their functioning. She even interacted with customers about quality, service etc.
