UP govt launches portal to keep check on irregularities and track ‘fake’ madrasas

New Delhi, Aug 19: With an aim to enhance transparency, recognize “fake madrasas” and keep tab on irregularities, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched a separate web portal for UP madrasa board.

All madrasas are supposed to register online and enter details of their management, teachers, number of students, building, class rooms etc. ''The portal will help in identifying fake madrasas operating in the state,'' said an official of the UP Madarsa Board.

UP Waqf Minister Mohsin Raza said that the move will bring transparency in the 19,000 recognised and 560 aided madrasas operating in the state. “There were a number of complaints of irregularities in madrasas and the website plans to tackle the same. This is a step towards digitisation which is on the priority of the Yogi Adityanath government,” he said.

The portal was launched by the state minister for minority welfare Lakshmi Narain Chowdhury, who said that madrasa education should also be modern like in other educational institutions. “With modernisation, students of madrasas will be able to get technical education and they will get better job opportunities,” he said.

Chowdhury alleged that the previous governments used madrasas as a vote bank but none of the records of payments, schemes have been maintained. “Our government’s priority is to give better and job- oriented education to all youths so that doctors and engineers are produced from these madrasas,” he said.

Meanwhile, Muslim clerics and madrasa managers have sharply criticised the creation of the portal. They alleged that the Islamic Seminaries are being ''targeted'' by the UP government.

Recently, a directive was sent to madrasas with guidelines to celebrate Independence Day and also video record the event. The government plans to take action against madrasas which did not sing the national anthem and celebrate the event in accordance.

Lakshmi Narain Chowdhury told media persons that action against madrasas that “lack patriotism” is justified.

The madrasas under communal attack in UP and elsewhere have been part of India’s glorious freedom struggle. The renowned historian RC Majumdar who produced tremendous research based works on Cellular Jail found out that the first batch which was incarcerated there consisted of leaders of 1857 Uprising like Maulana Fazle Haq Khairabadi, Maulana Liaqat Ali and Maulana Jafar Ali Dhaneshwari who died there while serving life sentences. The second batch of prisoners were Wahabi maulvi revolutionaries who had continued waging the 1857 liberation struggle. VD Savarkar before turning into an apostle of Hindu separatism, in his monumental work on 1857 Uprising, The Indian War of Independence 1857 hugely praised maulvis like Ahmed Shah who “had woven fine and cleverly the webs of the Jehad.”
According to the contemporary documents of the British military archives, in Delhi itself the British army after capturing the city in September 1857 hanged more than 3000 teachers and students of madrassas. Muslims were not allowed entry into the city till 1859.
During the anti-colonial freedom movement, these were madrassa maulvis like Maulana Shibli Nomani, Maulana Shaukat Ali, Maulana Muhammad Ali, Maulana Hifzur Rehman, Maulana Hasrat Mohani, Hafiz Ibrahim, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Maulana Habeebur Rehman Ludhianvi and Maulana Madani who with Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel bore brunt of the repression for being part of the freedom movement. Some of these maulvis were incarcerated at Malta and spent half of their lives in the British jails.
Madrassas with such a glorious role in the freedom struggle of India with countless martyrs from its past fraternity in the cause of the freedom of India, are being ridiculed and harassed for being ‘disloyal’. Let’s compare this fundamental character of madrassas with the role of RSS and Hindu Mahasabha in the freedom struggle whose children the rule India presently.
