Goa's Catholics not apprehensive about beef ban: Parrikar

Panaji, Aug 17 (IANS): Goan Catholics are not apprehensive about the beef ban issue in the state's Goan context, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Thursday.

He was responding to a query if in course of his campaign for the Panaji by-poll, Catholic voters had expressed their grievances about the beef ban narrative at the national level.

"Nothing is coming through. Those who have read and have knowledge, they know the situation vis a vis the Goan context," Parrikar said.

Catholics account for more than a quarter of the state's 1.5 million population and are a sizeable votebank in the Panaji assembly constituency.

The Goa Church has openly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party regime, both at the Centre and the BJP-led coalition government in the state, accusing it of trying to clamp down on sale of beef, brazenly in the rest of India and subtly in the coastal state, where minorities and a sizeable chunk of the six million plus tourists who visit the state, eat it.

Parrikar, during the recently concluded monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly however, said that the state government would take all steps possible to ensure supply of beef in the state.

Beef ban should not be based on the compulsion of the majority or minority issue. The food is the basic necessity of the human being.

If the God's in the Hindu holy scripture can hunt , consume and offer, Why the BJP is making cow as emotive issue?

There are wide range of reference in the holy scripture beef consumption. Any order should be based on the basis of the authentic holy scripture not on political compulsion.

Human sacrifice in the name of cow sanctity is unacceptable. Lynching is never part of Indian culture and should be outlawed.

Those who live in India, will LOVE India. Veg, non-veg is not important. People know how to take care of their health, dont worry.

Those who cannot tolerate what others do, should go to that country which has the people with the same mentality.

As it is sacred then why does not 56" and BJPee advocate it's ban world wide ? Is it sacred only in India not overseas ? Why not speak about banning also in the UN ? They might just ban 56" again. Why don't rakshaks go abroad and try lynching someone in countries where beef is had ?

If they aren't apprehensive about ban, why Parikar's government is 'taking all possible steps to ensure supply of beef in the state' ? This statement not only sounds childish but defies all logic and conmon sense too. But then after all the hue and cry about Gau rakshan we still continue to be one of the top exporters of beef. Shall we call this doublespeak by CM, Jumla induction from the top?
