Udupi: Man absconding after marrying twice arrested after 12 years

Udupi, Aug 15: Kaup police a man on Monday August 14, who had cheated and married a girl without revealing that he was married.

The arrested man is Hafiz Rehman (43). The arrest was made at Muththinakoppa in Chikkamagaluru district on Sunday night. Hafiz was absconding for 12 years.

A case of cheating and threatening was registered against Hafiz in 2005. He had obtained a bail through the court same year and was absconding. Udupi district and sessions court had issued a warrant against him. In the circumstances, Kaup police were on the lookout for the accused and three brokers who had helped him.

Hafiz was running a canteen in Muththinakoppa. Kaup police, who located Hafiz there, arrested him.

The court has ordered for his judicial custody for 14 days. The search for broker Nasir and other has continued.

Hafiz Rehman had married Kaup resident Dilshad keeping his earlier marriage a secret. Udupi resident Gafoor, Davanagere resident Nasir Khan and Kundapur resident Hussain helped in his second marriage. Gafoor and Hussain have died since then and Nasir Khan is absconding.

Dilshad who came to know of Hafiz Rehman’s earlier marriage had lodged a complaint in Kaup police station. Hafiz had threatened Dilshad in this connection. Police subsequently had arrested Hafiz in 2005 and had produced in district and sessions court. But he had come out on bail and was absconding.

PSI Lakshman, staff Sudhakar Bhandary and Sandesh Bhandary from Kaup police station took part in the operation.
