'Not Indian culture': Rajasthan commission to campaign against live-in relationships

Daijiworld Media Network

Aug 14: Terming live-in relationships as 'against Indian culture', the Rajasthan State Women’s Commission is all set to start a campaign, which will advise women against getting into such relationships.

The Commission’s chairperson Suman Sharma told media persons in Alwar, that it is women who suffer the most in a live-in relationship, especially when the relation breaks.

"As the relationship is against our culture, there is no provision to help them," she said and added that the campaign aims to create awareness. The commission may be the first such state body in the country to take up such a campaign.

To ensure less divorce rates and a peaceful married life, the Commission will also form a five-member committee of experts that will take up counselling of brides and grooms before they tie the knot.

A Zila Manch (district forum) will be started in every city to enable aggrieved women to lodge a complaint. Similarly, mahila panchayats will be formed at village level to help solve problems faced by women, she revealed.

Governments or governmental institutions have no business in the bed-rooms to check whether there is a marital or common-law relationship between unrelated adults. Instead, they should protect any child that is born out of wedlock in which case the law must protect the child and ensure that both the mother and father are responsible for its upbringing. Furthermore, many countries recognize common-law relationships for this purposes as well as for property sharing.
I have a "wild thought" - perhaps the institution of "aliyasanthan" and "marumakkatayam" that was prevalent in the coastal districts of Kanara and Kerala should be looked at in new light - avoids all the dowry harassment, property disputes, domestic violence, etc. , and recognizes women's, especially married women's dignity and independence. Perhaps this goes against the grain of modern culture.

    Declan and Rita,
You are so prejudiced on the political party being in power at the center which openly backs and being supported by, the Hindus, who are religiously in majority in India.
What is wrong in what Suman Sharma said? They have not implemented any rule against live in relationship. They are just campaigning about the bad effects of live in relationships.
As far as I am concerned, it is a personal freedom of any citizen to live in a live in relationship. But if there is option to get married why living in? Just want to have a sex life without commitments!! Hardly any live in relationships in India end up in a wedlock. If the girl has a baby, and the relationship breaks, the girl can not ask for any compensations from the husband. These things are being campaigned by Rajasthan state women's commission, which is laudable.
My advise is that the girls should strictly use contraceptives in a live in relationship. If you want to forgo it, then get married. Do not bring a life into this world who will be deprived of many rights which other babies enjoy in this world.

People who speak about Indian culture don't know anything about Indian culture.

Rajasthan State Women’s Commission must surely agree that dowry harassment is an Indian culture. Burning women by pouring kerosene over her is an Indian Culture. Blaming the women rape victim is a Indian culture.

I despise Feminist but these people in Women’s Commission are morons.

I totally support banning of live in relationships. It is not only against Indian culture but against human culture. Physical relation without marriage is a grave sin. It should be banned all over India.

I don't find anything wrong in live in relationships, but both should be free of any responsibilities. Contraception should be mandatory in this type of relationships. If the relationship breaks with a baby in the hand of the girl, both mother and child will have to lead a tough life for a long time.

You are an exception and I appreciate your loyalty in such a sensitive relationship. Whereas in many cases live in relationships end in breakups instead of happily ending in matrimonial bond. In our country girls in such relationships are frowned upon and no one comes forward to accept her when she is ditched. This is not the case in the west. so in the general interest of our society it should be limited to be “in a relationship” rather than to be in a “live-in relationship.”

The Rajasthan State Commission for Women to set up counselling centres for the brides and grooms?

That was not a purpose for which the statutory body was set up. The purposes of a State Commission for Women are to ensure that women are not disadvantaged from a legal perspective.

Or, are they looking to find ways to remain at the centre-stage in family disputes after the Supreme Court decided that the law and order machinery has taken the dowry harrassment laws too far?

My recommendation to unmarried men: wait until your girlfriend turns 40 before getting married. This way you are likely to protect yourself from the law and order machinery of the state including the Commissions for Women.

Always remember - whether Commissions by Women or Omissions by Women, it is the men who end up behind bars!

In other words they are saying that Dowry is Indian culture so it will be allowed ? Teaching and preaching morality is the duty of parents, elders and religious teachers/clergy etc. and not the government's business. That is why many BJP supporters themselves today are getting embarassed with BJP's politics because they constantly interfere with personal freedom and choices. What not to eat ? whom not to marry ? with whom not to live ? what not to wear ? what to sing ? whom not to love ? whom to hate ? how many children Hindus must produce per family ? Really disgusting state of affairs !
Why do they not ban tobacco ? why do they not ban alcohol ? Are these Indian culture Mr. PM ???
Hypocrisy of the BJP government. They only act very selec-tively when it suits their political agenda of polarising the majority community for votes to stay in power. Is that not appeasement and vote bank politics of another kind ???

    Jossey Saldanha,

Indian law does not recognise marital rape. If it was there would have been thousands of cases for the same.

I slowly ask at present what is indian culture?Women suffer only when the partner deserts them?or when husbands desert family and marries another dont suffer? When husband drink ,with his daily earning and dont bring home anything ,who suffers?children and wife have to sleep with empty stomach?who suffers when woman feel no security to her life, rapes are increasing now ,and and...women are forced to abort when it is a girl baby is?list is long.Even though I am not for a live in relationship, but it helps sometimes to know the person ,his real mind and realface can be known and getout of the situation before it is too late ,and jump into the well,or family sends back to bring more money as dowry ?How many of our indian wives suffer inside their four walls when husband beat them black and blue ,?Mostly women in Rajasthan and UP.suffer more.specially when they are uneducated and have to remain in house holds. It is left to everyone to decide what and when one should live as she wants.W e really dont want any moral police .

This is only to non-BJP supporters. Those who are BJP supporters can conveniently ignore this message. It is not binding on them, they can adapt any culture they want, eat any meat they want, they are law immuned free birds with clean chit anywhere anytime anyhow.
