Mangaluru, Aug 14: District in-charge minister Ramanath Rai along with other dignitaries inaugurated the newly renovated flag hoisting platform at Nehru Maidan here on Monday, August 14.

Addressing the gathering after unveiling the plaque, Rai said, “The previous platform was in pathetic condition and thus renovated just before the Independence Day celebrations. We had inaugurated a new Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru statue last time here at the maidan. An arch will be built here at Nehru Maidan before January 26, 2018."

Mayor Kavitha Sanil said, “I had observed along with other officials during inspection that the older platform had developed cracks. It was quite old too. Hence, we decided to renovate it and spent Rs 4.88 lac. While the earlier platform was built of red stone, the stones used for renovating are the ones we use in temple construction.”

MLA J R Lobo, chief whip of legislative council Ivan D’Souza, Police commissioner T R Suresh, MCC chief whip Shashidhar Hegde, MCC commissioner M Nazeer, corporator Sabitha Misquith, Rauf, T K Sudhir and others were present.

A long awaited and long desired platform for hoisting our National Flag on an auspicious occasion such as this is finally in place. Congratulations and thank you. Nehru Maidan has always been a prominent spot. It's more or less like the Trafalghar Square in London. Nehru Maidan can be improved in a ten fold fashion but we realize that it costs money, and budgetary constraints always prevail in our daily life of priorities. Anyway, it's a good beginning and over the next decade Nehru Maidan will certainly enjoy a much better "face lift" with lots of greenery, lots of nice landscaping and most importantly the entire area will be a one way street so that traffic can move safely and swiftly with a nice scenic drive all around.

Mangalore is proud of the landscape, and Nehru Maidan is an ideal spot for further improvements in the years ahead.

We still remember the visit of Pudit Nehru along with his daughter Indira Gandhi to Magalore. We remember that the traffic commotion was still bad in those days, and as a result, we remember, Pundit Nehru's motorcade could not proceed beyond Government Arts college, hence he and his daughter walked all the way from Government Arts College to the rostrum that was laid out for him at Nehru Maidan where he delivered an eloquent speech for lakhs of people gathered. Jai Hind
