Mangaluru, Aug 14: For the first time, 'Yelakki' variety of bananas have crossed figure of a hundred rupees per kilogram. The price rise has happened on account of short supply of this fruit at a time when festival season has begun.

This variety of banana is preferred as an offering in temples alongside coconuts. On festivals they occupy a very important place. This banana, which was being traded at around Rs 40 per kg a couple of years back, had recently become costlier gradually, touching the price range of Rs 60 to 70 per kg. There has been further rise in its prices on account of increased demand and dwindling supply in the recent past. This fruit has now been priced at Rs 115 per kg.

Traders who know the price trend of vegetables expect price of Yelakki banana to rise further as supply position is not expected to improve soon. It is said that because of shortage of rainfall, banana crop has failed everywhere including Tamil Nadu, which happens to be the major supplier of banana. Supplies from places like Shivamogga, Kollegal, Kanakapura, Hospet etc which used to contribute significantly to the market, have also dried up on account of rainfall shortage.
