Mangaluru, Aug 12: Moodbidri's Swaraj Maidan here on Saturday August 12 witnessed a massive gathering in support of Alva's Education Foundation and its chairman Dr Mohan Alva in the wake of criticism and allegations from various quarters over the death of Kavya, a student of Alva's high school last month. The public meet was organised by Mohan Alva's supporters, with former minister Amarnath Shetty as the convenor.

Addressing the gathering, chairman of Nitte Education Trust Vinay Hegde, who presided over the programme, said, "Kavya's death should reach its logical conclusion within the framework of law. Instead, it has turned into a political consipiracy to defame Dr Mohan Alva and his institution and gain political mileage. Those who are questioning the hostel facilities in Alva's institutions should first look at the condition of government-run hostels in the state.

"It is natural for things to go wrong in a system, but when someone falls, one should lend a helping hand to set things right instead of pushing him down further and giving wrong message to society solely out of jealousy. The public should not support undesirable developments and should join hands to build a society where truth alone is paramount," he said.

Veteran literary figure and former vice-chancellor of Hampi University Dr B A Vivek Rai said, "Creating rumours and using media to spread them with the intention of slandering an institution is a matter of great concern and worry. Alva's institution is model for the state government which is mulling introduction of a separate cultural policy. This institution has opened up job opportunities for students across communities and provided an atmosphere of learning, and if you do an audit of the instiution in these terms, you will realize the greatness of its achievements. We must ensure that such a renowned instiution does not lose the confidence it has built among people."

Senior writer Vaidehi said, "Dr Mohan Alva's nature and stature are in themselves his support. Kavya's death has become an excuse for people who cannot bear his success. Opportunists who try to cook on the funeral fire should realize that death has a place of importance of its own. Why is the media sowing poisonous seeds for TRP and money?"

Fr Francis Gomes of Mulki parish said, "Do not pay heed to rumours. Media should uphold values and present facts without any hype or exaggeration. Dr Mohan Alva is a person who has helped fulfilled many dreams, and everything he has touched has turned into gold. This is just a low phase and will pass."

Former minister Amarnath Shetty and convenor of the programme in his welcome address pointed out that Dr Mohan Alva and his institution had done a lot for Moodbidri in the field of education, and etched Moodbidri's name at the national level in sports and culture. "Thousands of students are receiving free education in Alva's institutions under the sports quota. Has any other college given such facillities to students? Dr Mohan Alva has worked hard day and night for the welfare of students. He is a humble man who has achieved a lot. People should stop character assassination without even knowing him.

"Dr Alva has already said that he is ready for any probe. Still, media channels are running the stories and giving judgements. If media can give judgements, then why do we have courts? Media should leave the probe to the police and the court. We are not against people who are staging protests, as they do not have sufficient intellect to understand the matter. Will those who have come forward to probe the facilities in the institution, instead of the case itself, be ready for such an investigation at the state level?" he added.

Chancellor of Yenepoya University Y Abdulla Kunhi said that he has known Dr Alva for 40 years and has seen him grow into an educationist. "Kavya was a talented girl and her death has brought as much grief to the institution as it has to her family. There is no doubt about that. The investigation has been taken up by the authority concerned and truth will soon come out. But it is not right to malign Alva and spread rumours. Thousands of students obtain education here. If it was not a good institution, why would parents send their children here? Mohan Alva's aim has always been to provide education, do good to the poor, and encourage sportspersons."

Brigadier I N Rai said that Dr Alva is one of those rare educationists who has instilled a sense of patriotism in youngsters and who has encouraged them to join the armed forces.

Secretary of Alva's institution Dr B Yashovarma, chairman of Shree Devi Education Foundation A Sadananda Shetty and Buntara Matr Sangha president Ajith Kumar Malady also spoke.

Manjunath Bhandary of Sahyadri Group of Institutions, Kuldeep M of Moodbidri Chowtara Aramane, convenor of Sharada Vidyalaya M B Puranik, Jayaram Shetty of Jnansudha Institution, international athlete Sahana Poojary and many others including former students of Alva's instiutions were present.

Prior to the programme, a minute's silence was observed to pray for Kavya.

The following resolution was passed:

- Preventing spread of rumours by speeding up the probe
- Ensuring strict punishment to the guilty
- Appropriate action against those misleading the society
- A committee to keep a watch on those attacking individual freedom or spoiling the health of the society

Nearly 8,000 people participated in the public meet. Mangaluru Agricultural Society president K Krishnaraj Hegde proposed the vote of thanks. Kadri Navaneet Shetty compered and Diwakar Shetty read out the resolution passed during the meet.

being a very young girl (minor and teenage) kavya MIGHT HAVE taken extreme step....this kind of incident might happen when a person suddenly and unexpectedly faces extreme threat or fear....who caused her fear or threat... early in the morning around 4 o'clock mind will be very raw and cannot think properly...some one has shown threatening behaviour or created terror in her mind....that is a probability..

now coming to the PD (Physical directior), discrete probe and inquiries have to be conducted with sports girls of the same college whether he was just phyiscal education director or was he having menacing / indecent behaviour with girls?

this PD is the centre piece here whether it is murder or suicide...his life may under threat or he might have been put underground to prevent any extraction of any information from him....many times the key person accused in heinous crimes 'disappears'..happened in many murder cases...to hush up evidence , truth and to protect people who may be exposed by the accused, if interrogated.

Yes, This rally was required long back. Good Alva's broke their silence or else protesters would have gone on and on with their baseless comments and judgement on Alva's institution. Truth has to come out. No one can protest against the truth. Shame on those opportunist who have conducted protest against the institution without knowing the fact.

Alvas has never faced this dilemna before. They themselves are not sure whether to lead the investigation or mislead it, with both ready to cause mighty impacts on its future.
    1. If Alvas leads the probe , they fear truth may come out which may be bitter
    2. If they mislead the probe, it will damage the reputation of the institution in the long run
It's like a two-way sword. That's the price one has to pay for projecting the institution with virtual realities, ignoring roots.

Yet another show of support in favour of Mohan Alva by the so called bigwigs of the community/society. It is foolish to engage in these types of pressure tactics. Will this show of support prove a culprit to be innocent or vice-versa?As of now no one knows the truth except those perpetrators of this heinous crime on that innocent girl. Rather than putting pressure on the Government/police/investigating agencies to conduct fair and impartial enquiry in to the whole episode of Kavya's death and come out with true findings, these organisers of support to Alva are trying to mislead the investigation. Truth and fact can be hidden by these kinds of public support nor they could be decided majority or minority. Let the whole truth come out and the guilty be punished irrespective of his power and position in the society. Let justice prevail and Kavya's soul rest in eternal peace.

I am really dismayed to see educated people calling a public meeting about the reputation issue of an institution.
Crime and death can occur anywhere even in preamiar/ leading institution like jnu or Indian institute of science. Does this mean they do not believe in the rule of law?
Are there any violations of the regulations at Alva's institute?

I feel so sorry for Kavya and her poor parents. In our country, people blindly support those who have money and power. There is no place for justice and fairness. Money can buy people and politicians. It is a brazen display of wealth and muscle power. I see no future for poor people in this country. Once upon a time, I was getting a lot of pride and pleasure in calling myself an Indian. Not any more. I feel like hanging my head in shame when I see so much injustice taking place around us. Dakshina Kannada district is said to be a place where educated people live. Of what use is this education if we are unable to distinguish between evil and good? If we are unable to stand up to injustice and take up the cudgels for the poor and the oppressed?

Managing educational institutions to serve society is not monopoly of any sect. We need to strengthen the hands of those building society with culture and values. Mr. Ugrappa overstepped in his reaction as if he is handling all portfolios of state and central government and his knee jerk reaction speaks for itself. Most of the private medical colleges in Karnataka charged excess fee than stipulated by Government and failed to act on specific complaints in this regard because congress politicians, including Dr. Parameshwara, has stake in medical colleges. Mr. Ugrappa was a mute spectator when private medical colleges charged Rs. 90.00 Lakhs for PG and Rs. 40.00 Lakhs for MBBS per year where as he reacted violently on rumors that Alvas is charging a fee of Rs. 1.00 Lakh from the affluent section. It seems he has conveniently forgotten the basic principles of cross subsidy in education which is upheld by congress government in Karnataka to meet their needs and greeds. The testimony from the first girl qualified for JEE with 1144 rank from the most backward Koraga community Ms. K. Sakshi that "I got free coaching for JEE at Alvas. I did not spend any money on my education at Alvas Institution" speaks for itself and is a befitting reply to Mr. Ugrappa. Reaction from Mr. Ugrappa on salary of staff, residential status, exorbitant fees, building violations, safety norms, permission from local body etc.. etc... of which many are out of his domain raise many concerns and questions....!

Though the postmortem report is come on 31st July 2017 as SUICIDE. Many of the opportunist still trying to prove a SUICIDE case as MURDER with baseless questions on ALVA institution. This is 100% wrong. No individual has the rights to do this? Yes, As per India Law we all have rights to protest. But this protest is baseless when the postmortem report is already come as SUICIDE. Yes, I do understand the agony of a Mother who lost her child. If you make a proper study on this few associations are playing with he sentiments of a Mother... nothing else. When this is a SUICIDE if the protest is done to prove this as a MURDER. This protest will be a waste and they will not get a answer to it. TRUTH will remain always TRUTH.

Instead of spending on such a fanfare, if college management would have sent official condolence to the parents.

If media reports have to be believed 'Kavya' is not the first death in the campus. But 'Kavya' death has opened the pandora box of other mysterious death which went unnoticed.

Dr Alva can't understand the pain of mother is going through. If he is just in his version his college should be given free access to investigation.

Same way here people are demanding justice for the deceased soul without condemning the institute but this same rogue political party is giving a different direction while answering talking about the image of the institute which is not at all in line with the question. One can easily grasp what's cooking inside!?!?!?.
