Foundation laid for B R Shetty's $1.8-bn BRS Medicity near Amaravati

Vijayawada, Aug 12 (TNN): Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for BRS Medicity at Dondapadu village, near Amaravati on Thursday.

BRS Ventures and Holdings' proposed investment of $1.8 billion in Andhra Pradesh is a step towards changing the way medical education, research and development are conducted in India.

Padamshree Dr B R Shetty had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) at the Partnership Summit in January 2017 on setting up the Medicity.

Dr Shetty moved from India to the UAE in 1973 in search of greener pastures and went on to become the pioneer of private healthcare sector in the UAE with NMC, which he established in 1975.

Under his leadership, an array of service-oriented businesses has flourished across healthcare, financial services, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, education, distribution, infrastructure and hospitality.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said he wants Amaravati to become a hub for healthcare and medical facilities, and added that in the coming years there will be substantial investment from the Gulf countries. Naidu further hinted that direct flights will be introduced between Vijayawada and Dubai soon and said he was hopeful that Medicity will change the face of Amaravati.

Dr Shetty said a state-of-the-art hospital, which will meet global standards besides being affordable, will come up in the BRS Medicity and laid emphasis on helping farmers who are the backbone of the nation.

With 1,500 beds and access to world-class medical education and allied health care at affordable prices, Amaravati will be the global magnet in the coming years, attracting the best of minds from Andhra Pradesh, India and the world.

Neopharma will also build a manufacturing facility in Amaravati to produce medical implementation and equipments for the multi-speciality hospital.

The BRS Amaravati Medicity will partner with University of California, San Diego, and the university shall accommodate 1,000-1,500 students where various programs will be offered in the spectrum of medicine and healthcare research.

"The healthcare landscape of the region will be transformed with BRS Amaravati Medicity's new facilities, gateways and plazas. They will be seamlessly integrated with the surrounding lifestyle components like transport hubs and entertainment cities including open air theatres, elevated walkways, community hubs and sports cities," added Shetty.

The chief minister, who delivered a 20-minute speech after laying the foundation stone of the project, looked exhausted all of a sudden and was forced to take rest for some time. It caused some worry in the crowd as the CM is known to be a very active person. Health teams were also alerted. However, he recovered after a few minutes.

Excellent decision on BRS getting tied up with UC San Diego so that medical education and hospital industry gets the exceptional know-how of US institutions to further reduce cost and improve quality. Here all the hospitals of LA county are being managed by UC Los Angeles which is another campus of University of California.
We had the privilege to interact with one of our relatives who lives in San Diego & has enrolled his child to medicine in UCLA. Enrolling in Unversity of California is every parents dream, especially to get their child enrolled in UC Berkley, UC Los Angeles, UC San Francisco, UC Irvine in that order.
With the setting up of BRS medicity & related hospitals in different parts of India, now the people from abroad have the right reason to settle in India especially after their retirement.

What a magnanimous gesture towards Andhra Pradesh and India by creating a Medcity in Amaravati. What a noble act towards humanity. What a thoughtful contribution from an esteemed man from Karnataka to devote his precious thoughts and resources towards our neighboring State. Thank you so much, Dr. B. R. Shetty for all your kindness and generosity that will go down in the history of India thru thousands of Students that will graduate in their Medicinal expertise, and millions of people from India and abroad that will benefit from the Health related facilities and amenities.

India is now becoming a Health Vacation Center for thousands of Americans who are anxious to visit India for various Medical reasons and will also accompany their families so that side by side they could also enjoy a peaceful and simple vacation with reasonable costs.

Your gesture of love and devotion towards your country will bring lots of additional patriotism amongst millions of Indians who are abroad and watching your dedications towards life in India.

All that we can extend to you from a distance is our sincere gratitude for all your selfless contributions towards India. You are a living model to hundreds of millions of India, including ourselves, who have to give to their country much more than before. While India is about to embrace the Seventy first Independence Day, this gift of Medcity will be an unique souvenir that will survive, grow and prosper ten fold under your own supervision and knowledge.

Thank you very much, and a big God Bless.

This $1.8bn investment should have come to Karnataka. We do not know why it went to Amaravati.
It would have boosted our health care and employment sector.

Rao, there are too many already in Karnataka, specially in DK. Better to maintain existing ones efficiently! BRS is wise, he knows the battle with Manipal, Mangalore, belgavi, Dharwad and Bangalore is saturated with health care facility and education. Who wants to invest in todays atmosphere of DK?Inclined towards govrakshaks and communal instigations....? Getting bit tough?? CM of AP is supporting BRS and let him do well there! Listen to BRS in the same forum...he is investing in Udupi, Jog falls and so on! Who is reciprocating with him and to what extent? Investment will flow naturally where it get good support by government and locals to a larger extent!
