Swimmer Chupkov breaks own World Championships record

Budapest, Jul 29 (IANS): Russian Anton Chupkov broke his own FINA World Championships record in the men's 200 metres breaststroke on his way to winning the title here.

A late acceleration from the 20-year-old Chupkov was enough to break the Japanese domination over the first 150 meters of the race, as he clocked 2:06.96 on Friday, reports Efe.

Chupkov, won came in third at the Rio 2016 Olympics, broke the record he set in the semi-finals, when he registered 2:07.14.

Japanese Yasuhiro Koseki and Ippei Watanabe, who did not make the most of their strong start, had to settle with second and third places respectively.

Koseki clocked 2:07.29, ahead of his compatriot Watanabe (2:07.47), the world record holder since January, when he registered 2:06.67.
