Bengaluru: No Hindi in Namma Metro signages, says CM in letter to Centre

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jul 28: With instances of vandalism on Namma Metro signboards written in Hindi language on a rise, chief minister Siddaramaiah wrote to union minister for housing and urban affairs, Narendra Singh Tomar, asking him to remove the usage of Hindi in Metro signs.

The CM’s letter written on Friday stated, "Although the state government has dealt with those who defaced the signages and maintained law and order in and around metro stations, you would agree that in the face of continued agitation and demands from litterateurs and intellectuals of the city for giving primacy to the language of the state and the languages with which the people of the city are comfortable with, it is counter-productive to continue using the three-language policy."

Stating that the matter is a 'sensitive' one, CM Siddaramaiah said, "It will be better to follow a persuasive approach rather than a mandatory one in the use of Hindi.

"It is not essential to use Hindi in signages as commuters who use Metro are comfortable with reading and understanding Kannada or English," he said.

"Therefore, the state government is compelled to ask the BMRCL to temporarily redesign the signages in metro stations and remove Hindi script," the CM wrote in the letter.

Objections on the use of Hindi in Metro signboards started when the first leg of Namma Metro (Baiyappanahalli to MG Road) was completed. The Karnataka Chief Secretary had written to the chief secretary of the urban development ministry asking him to approve usage of only two languages.

However, the union urban development ministry in an order dated December 9, 2016, had written to the BMRCL MD that a three-language policy (local language, Hindi and English) is mandatory in all non-Hindi speaking States.

It was highlighted that the Centre also contributed financially to the Namma Metro project. Countering this, Siddaramaiah stressed that the financial burden of the State is much higher as it bears the cost of land acquisition, operating losses, and all debt-servicing. “It would be appropriate that the policies of the state government be implemented in the project,” he said and asked Tomar to “review his earlier decisions”.

In June this year, an online campaign “Namma Metro Hindi Beda” gained prominence. This lead to activists camouflaging Hindi language sign boards with black paint across metros stations in Bengaluru. The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike also staged protests outside the Vijayanagar Metro demanding that the government remove the Hindi signs.

According to the protesters, Hindi is not a national language and they believe that the Centre is imposing Hindi on them. Pointing out that Hindi is not used in the neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Kerala states, they say that if a third language needs to be used, then it should be Tamil or Telugu, as a larger population in Bengaluru speak these two languages.

The CM’s decision comes a day after the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) wrote to him, pointing out violations in language and recruitment policies by the BMRCL.

The KDA has stressed that all low-ranking jobs (cleaning, security staff) must be reserved for Kannadigas, as the BMRCL is a State government agency.

The CM’s letter to the Centre has been hailed as a victory of the Kannada campaign.

Knowing one extra language is not a bad idea.More the person knows the languages better for his communication.

We kannadigas are always welcomed everyone from India. In North Karnataka we Marthi, East we have Telgu, in south Tamil and north east we have Konkani and Tulu. Though 7 out 10 population in Bangalore is from outsiders it is better to have Kannada,Hindi and English signage.
We don't be like Mumbaikars treatment to Biharis or Kannadigas in Tamil Nadu. We are one nation.
Let's not fight on pitty issues like language and water. It is necessity we all need to understand.
Hope our CM Siddaramaiah should not make this issue.
    Jai Hind

It's a shame that this CM announcing to remove Hindi from Namma Metro. I request Kannada Rakshana Vedike to remove all sign boards which has Tamil, Telugu & Malayalam on it. If we don't want our National Language, then we don't need other regional languages too... Just pull down all the Malayalam sign boards from Mangalore first. Tamil, Telugu sign boards from Bangalore too... Let all of them learn Kannada or else just leave Karnataka. This is too much....

regressive northies should stop enforcing Hindi down our throats as it is NOT our National Language. In fact it is one of the 22 scheduled official languages.

It worth noting that all economically well off states like Maharastra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Punjab do not use Hindi as their first language but only BIMARU states use it.

If people go to Delhi, Jaipur or Lucknow people there will ridicule and mock you as Madrasis.

I am not against any languages. It is good for all the citizens of India to learn all languages as much as he can for his own benefit. All languages are good and there is nothing bad in any languages.

I know Konkani, Tulu, Kannada, English, HIndi, little-mittle Tamil, Arabic and Malayalam. I am also knowing Marathi which is mixed language with 80 percent konkani rest is mixed with hindi and Kannada.

I am not against Hindi as one person clearly wrote:

I quote. Hindi matter would not have cropped up unless centre's compulsion to make hindi in the southern states. Blame the Central govt., not Karnataka govt. Unquote.

I do have love for all the languages because my God Knows all the languages of the humans of this planet.

@Rajesh, Mangalore , India being a multy linguistic nation it is imperative not to impose one language upon other existing languages.

The problem with the citizens is love ❤ for a particular language which must cease in the hearts ♥ of the people.

The mistake is from the central government simply asking reports.

By giving way for this kind of politics on signage in the Metro stations, the Chief Minister has sullied his own image. If we consider ourselves as Indians, why can't we have a national language? When all countries have one language as national language, why we cannot have one? There is no supremacy to Hindi language, but if we think that Karnataka is a part of India, what harm is there in having signage in Hindi and accept Hindi as national language? I see Malayalam language is also used in signage in some hospitals in Mangalore! When we see that no body feels anything! What an irony!

This is totally election gimmick to get more votes with a hidden agenda of dividing the country on the basis of the language or to have regional political party like AP and Tamilnadu model. Karnataka is a cosmopolitan state with people with different culture and languages. Bangaluru has achieved due to IT and become a modern city having a presence on the world map. We all know that there is a contribution from the people from all walks of life and not only kannadigas. So removing Hindi from Namma Metro is not a ideal thing to do. In fact, we should have all the major languages which are in our currency notes.

We will be happy to put Hindi boards in Bangalore and other places in Karnataka if Hindi speaking states reciprocate and put Kannada boards in their states. Otherwise, there's no reason to put up this alien language anywhere in Karnataka. Nobody is forcing them to learn Kannada when they visit Karnataka, but let them make do with English boards. We cannot put boards for all 2000 languages in the world just because they don't want to read Kannada and English.

When I say this, as a Kannadiga from the Ghatta that you Mangaloreans have a love-hate relationship with, I am also of the view that Mangalore and Udupi should have Tulu boards and Tulu should be made an official language of Karnataka, along with Kodava Takk and Konkani. To stay in power siddu is doing all this antics. He thinks that he will get sympathy and votes of Kannada chavunvists. How can a three name, one in kannada, English & Hindi become obscene?. why the Kannada activists spared english?. Now it seems like this is an instigated agaiation.
