17 members of same family found dead in floods: Gujarat police

Ahmedabad, Jul 26 (AFP): Seventeen members of the same family were found dead on Wednesday as floodwaters receded from a village in Gujarat, officials said, as the death toll from the state-wide disaster climbed above 110.

"They seem to have drowned in the floodwaters. The bodies were found buried in muck," AB Parmar, a police inspector at the scene, told news agency AFP, adding the deceased were from the same family.

A senior state government official, Pankaj Kumar, confirmed the discovery of the bodies in Banaskantha district.

Gujarat's state emergency authority said on Wednesday at least 12 other bodies were found overnight as rescue crews sifted through communities devastated by heavy monsoon flooding.

The official death toll from the floods in the state stands at 111, with more than 36,000 people evacuated to safe areas as helicopters and boats try to reach those still stranded.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi surveyed the devastation across Gujarat in a helicopter on Tuesday, urging people across his home state to remain resilient.

Apart from Gujarat, the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam have been hard-hit by monsoon flooding, while pockets of the eastern states of Odisha and Bihar have also been affected.

In Assam, at least 75 people have been killed. Tens of thousands of acres of crops have been destroyed.

Gujrat floods are posing grim situation, while some rivers – dams there appear to be overflowing. Helicopter service and NDRF – Army - Air Force- Navy have been pressed into service for rescue. Rajasthan and other vulnerable States have also been impacted. This Vedic astrology writer had , however , alerted against massive floods and connected serious problems in Gujrat , Rajasthan and other vulnerable States through article “ 2017 – an opportune year for India with major worrisome concerns in February-March and August-September” issued widely to Indian news media last year in October and November 2016. The text of the alert covering near and in August-September 2017 , reads like this : “ near and in August-September times, look to be presenting health hazards or epidemics. Floods and landslides may generate huge worry in Gujrat , Rajasthan and other vulnerable States of India. Plants and crops including food crops could fall short of normal expectations. Huge dangerous super sea storm in coastal areas could likely lash at , among others , Gujrat leaving a distinct mark of devastation on the land”. Going by news reports as on 25 July 2017 , it can be said that the alert has been meaningful.
Note : It may be alright to take more care and appropriate measures against floods , landslides and other disasters during 1 to 3 August 2017 in Rajasthan , Gujrat and other vulnerable States of the country.

best solution would be to build a canal to Rann of Kutch and divert the excess water to a desert area and make this vast area fertile again.
