Seven killed in Mumbai building collapse

Mumbai, Jul 25 (IANS): At least seven persons were killed and many more trapped when a four-storey dilapidated residential building collapsed here on Tuesday morning, an official said.

Another 12 injured persons have been rescued from the rubble and efforts were on to extricate the others from under the debris of Sai Darshan building at Ghatkopar which crashed with a roar around 10.30 a.m.

Fourteen fire engines, rescue vans and ambulances besides teams of the state disaster management force were at the site, the BMC Disaster Control official said.

A fire brigade officer said 30-40 persons were still feared trapped and rescue operations were going on. This was this monsoon's first major house crash.

The injured were rushed to hospitals. Unconfirmed reports put the deaths at 12.

Around 12 families lived in the building which also housed a private hospital on the ground floor. The building figured on the BMC's list of "dangerous buildings".

This building is in Damodar Park in Ghatkopar West. Buildings in Damodar Park are not more than 30 years old and the life span of RCC buildings is normally not less than 50 years. Some years back one building in Damodar Park was tilted and was repaired and whether this is the same building, I do not know. Within 30 years to become dilapidated is strange, may be the construction was sub standard. The rate in Damodar Park was Rs 16000 (sixteen thousand) per square feet.
    RIP for the departed souls.

The time has come to demolish all old buildings which are listed out as dangerous for staying, irrespective of what kind may be the resistance.
Failing to act properly, many such instances can't be avoidable in the rainy seasons ahead. R.I.P. to the deceased.
