Flamengo beat Coritiba 2-1 in Brazil Serie A

Rio de Janeiro, July 23 (IANS): Former Brazil midfielder Everton Ribeiro converted a late penalty as the Rio city football club Flamengo defeated Coritiba 2-1 in Brazil's Serie A championship.

Colombian forward Orlando Berrio opened the scoring on Saturday for the hosts before Henrique Almeida netted an equalizer just after halftime, reports Xinhua news agency.

Ribeiro held his nerve from the spot in second-half stoppage time after Vinicius Junior, who signed a deal in May to join Real Madrid next year, was brought down in the box by Marcio Leite.

The result left Flamengo third in the standings with 28 points from 16 matches while Coritiba dropped to 14th with 19 points.

In Saturday's only other match, Chapecoense won 2-1 at Vitoria, thanks to goals from Reinaldo and Lourency.
