Faulty EVM gave votes to BJP in ZP election : Maharashtra official

Maharashtra, Jul 23 (IANS) : A collector from Maharashtra’s Buldhana district has confirmed the malfunctioning of an electronic voting machine used during district council elections in February this year. Replying to an RTI query filed by activist Anil Galgali, the collector said any vote given to an independent candidate, had gone to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate.

The collector said the glitch was observed at polling station no. 56 in Sultanpur of Lonar town in Buldhana on February 16. “When the voter pressed the Independent candidate no. 1’s coconut symbol, the LED lamp flashed against the BJP candidate no. 4’s lotus symbol, signifying the vote had gone to the latter,” Galgali said.

The independent candidate, Asha Arun Zore, had first lodged her complaint on the day of polling, however, the election officer concerned had refused to act on it. After half the voting time was passed, the election officials closed the polling station citing malfunctioning EVMs. A repoll was conducted on February 21, the RTI said.

Galgali had filed an RTI query on June 16 seeking information about the complaint filed by Zore and details of the inquiry report submitted by the returning officer.

Galgali wondered why the Election Commission had consistently denied any EVM fraud when such instances have occurred. “In order to avoid such repetition in future, the Election Commission must consider alternatives to the EVMs which can be tampered with,” he said.

Allegations of EVM tampering had come up after the Bharatiya Janata Party had swept state elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

    Politicians and media have very short memories. While the BJP and its supporters are mocking Mayawati for raising doubts over possible EVM tampering, they seem to have forgotten that the saffron party’s top leaders were the first ones to raise serious questions over the credibility of these electronic devices following their drubbing in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections in the hands (no pun intended!) of the Congress.
    So much so, that in 2010 BJP’s prominent spokesperson GVL Narasimha went ahead and wrote a book on the topic (Democracy at Risk! Can we trust our Electronic Voting Machines?) with a foreword by party’s then PM-in-waiting L K Advani. The book is still selling on Amazon at $10.62.
    Another BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has been among the most vocal leaders to challenge the credibility of EVMs. Swamy, in his inimitable modus operandi, also moved the Supreme Court on the issue and the apex court ordered the poll panel to introduce ‘paper trail’ to EVMs through the country. Listen to what Swamy had to say about EVMs below.
    Meanwhile in 2010, a trio of scientists – Hari K. Prasad, Rop Gonggrijp and J. Alex Halderman – claimed India’s EVMs are vulnerable to fraud. They refuted claims of security made by the Election Commission and demonstrated how they can hack into the EVMs.
    When most secured encrypted bank transaction can be hacked only in India our autonomous Election commision trust the machine which is scrapped by European long before.
    For BJP which wrote book questioning 'democracy' in opposition, now in ruling have no problem as long as same machine brings votes.
    Jai Hind

    All the ECI team was appointed by Dongress during their regime. Even EVM was introduced by them. Before that paper ballots were rigged and Dongies were ruling last 70 years making us 3rd world country. Somehow,now they want to push Pappu up on top position so that they can enjoy. People of India realised the dirty game of dynasty rule. "Nanch na Aatha Angan Theda"

    Now we all know how BJP won recent elections. In fact, Arvind, Mayawati and other leaders did raise serious doubts and now it's proven to be true.

    BJP is a big ZERO without EVM's.
    Please reintroduce ballot papers.

    Fault was obvious with the said evm.

    What about other EVMs?
    Suppose if LED lamp against coconut was glowing and vote goes to congress or bjp, how do you find out that? Please prove with other EVMs...

    It was not a case of EVM tampering and this could be a technical fault. If there was deliberate tampering similar complaints could have been reported from more machines in other centres,” a Buldhana district as well as entire Maharastra.

    Do you even know the algorithm of presidential elections in India? It is amazing that even Meira Kumar has humbly accepted her defeat and you are spitting venom without having even having an iota of evidence to back it up.
    Victory to NDA candidate was a foregone conclusion even without the support of JD(U) or the cross voting. Even if a electric pole was nominated as their candidate, that pole would have won the election with the number of MP's and MLA's in the NDA pool.

    My dear friend, before blaming the ECI, please get few facts right here:
    - Firstly ECI is not responsible for the conduct of local body elections;
    - Secondly, ECI is not responsible for the supply or maintenance of EVM's to the local body elections;
    - Thirdly, ECI is an independent constitutional body

    What would you say if your third cousin is engaged in criminal activity and I blame you for his conduct? That is exactly what you are doing here by blaming ECI for any deficiency in Maharashtra State Election body's deficiency.

    I would also like to know is since a large number of losing parties in the recent state elections blamed EVM for their losses, why didn't anyone show up at the ECI office for actually proving the mechanism of that wrong doing?

    Lastly, the most important question is - if you do not trust the ECI, then you should not participate in the election altogether. Because if you think ECI can assist BJP by tampering with EVM's then what is stopping the ECI from assisting them in ballot paper voting? Ballot paper voting has much higher malpractices chance then EVM system.

    After bjp coming to power in year 2104 nothing remained independent, body like film censor board,FTII, even eelction commission also influenced by RSS ideology, certain extent judicial system, CBI even all governors of state appointed by modi is acting on behalf of him.Latest case of pondicherry. If the politicians allow the independent body to function interdependently the same modi and shah would have been in jail for 20002 riots in Gujarat.

    I think you are forgetting that Congress was in power from 2004 to 2014. If there was really a legally admissible evidence to link Modi / Shah with Gujarat riots, then Congress would have absolutely made sure that they are behind bars. But alas, other than the saber rattling, we have seen nothing.
    (Please bear in mind that Modi's moral responsibility to protect the residents of Gujarat during 2002 riot is not the same as criminal responsibility).

    If you are saying that everyone from EC to SC is a BJP chamcha now, then why bother fight elections or go to court? If you have lost confidence in those constitutional institutions, then you should not be participating in the elections in the first place. No point in losing the elections first and then start crying like a baby.
