Bengaluru: Man plays guitar as neurosurgeon works on his brain

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Abhishek Prasad resigned from his job in a company as playing guitar was very close to his heart. He wanted to pursue his passion of becoming a guitarist. However, in course of time, his fingers turned stiffer, making it an agonizing experience for him to play his favourite instrument.

The experts diagnosed his condition as guitarist dystonia, a rare condition. It is a disruptive flexion of one or more muscles or muscle groups. Abhishek's three fingers in the left hand were becoming too stiff to move when playing guitar. His dream of becoming a guitarist had soon begun to turn into a nightmare.

Abhishek battled with the condition for about two years before approaching the doctors. He was prescribed medicines. During tests, they found that he was suffering from a rare neurological disorder, specific to people who play guitar.

Dr Sharan Srinivasan, neurosurgeon from the city, headed the team which performed surgery on Abhishek. The patient was made to play guitar during the surgical procedure, as the doctors wanted to check whether he was experiencing sensory loss. The surgery was performed on June 11 at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital. A hole was made in his skull, and an electrode was passed through it to the brain, after properly studying the target location for lesions, Dr Sharan Srinivasan said.

The disorder has been addressed and the patient has been healed of his condition. It is learnt that the said medical condition occurs normally in people between the age group of 20 and 40.

    Rita,
    Well said.
First of all, we must have faith in ourselves than doubting the Doctors and the treatment. Most of the times for Seasonal cold or minor hailments I purchase medicines from Pharmacies on the advise of the Paharmacist but not for a prollonged period and I get the positive result.

@Santhosh mangalore.here who is doctor and who is patient? Please dont jump from onething to other and dont blame them always. As you say ,even for cold and chest pain, they order xray, there is a good possibility of a TB,or enlarged heart, lungs problem. But a chest xray also is not diagnosed always right. As I know personally by my father in law, a lung with metastasis of cancer was diagnosed as Tubercolose.and admitted in TB hospital.

@ Rita keep your experience to Germany, I am talking about my experience in Mangalore. One of my relative 86 years old sent ICU and kept there for two to three days each time, three times before finally dying at home after discharged.

Instead of taking pain and risks associated with hole making in the skull, he should have left playing guitar. Very stupid decision to undergo surgery...
Good that he has recovered. What if he slips to comatose?

Can anyone predict illness or for that matter ones own death in advance? Can anyone predict any accidents, misfortune or disasters in advance?

Science is so great and doctors have achieved some success in this case.
