Mangaluru: Strong wind, intensified monsoon, inflict widespread losses

Mangaluru,  Jul 21: Reports about losses and danger to lives posed by intensified rain coupled with strong wind are pouring in from various places.

Tornado which swept through  Yermal Tenka village near Padubidri at around 2.30 am on Thursday wreaked havoc with people's lives there. Over 50 trees and 12 electric poles in the village got uprooted. As per an estimate, loss suffered in this village is over three lac rupees. Trees got uprooted on the eastern and western walls and roof of a house owned by Narayana Poojary behind Sandu Danti Garody in the village. Several coconut, mango, palm, jack fruit, banyan and other trees fell to the ground in a farm owned by Navinchandra Poojary nearby. Power cables passing through the village were damaged. Surprisingly, although several houses around the Garody suffered heavy losses, the Garody remained unaffected.

Mescom executive engineer at Kaup, Narasimha, said that the company suffered loss of about Rs 1.50 lac in this incident.

A house belonging to Vinod Shetty at Hermunde village in Karkala taluk crashed to the ground. Walls and roofs of several houses fell to the ground either because of wind or fallen trees. Traffic on Hebri-Mudrady road was affected as trees, bushes, bamboo groves etc fell across the road at seven places. A motor bike rider suffered injuries after getting entangled in a fallen bamboo grove.

About 25 houses in Sullia taluk were damaged due to fallen trees. Two motor bike riders escaped with minor injuries although a tree got uprooted on their moving motor bike at Odla near Periadka on Uppinangady-Kadaba state highway on Thursday morning.  The motor bike suffered damages. In this case, the tree had also fallen on power cables but it did not result in risk to anyone's life. Similar reports have come in from various other places.

A large number of tiles of government higher primary school at Kappady within Kalthodu gram panchayat in Kundapur taluk have flown away due to wind. Currently, only two rooms of this school are usable now and the classes for remaining students are conducted inside a temple nearby.
