Udupi, Jul 20: Milagres College, Kallianpur held the investiture ceremony of its newly elected Students’ Welfare Council members at Milagres Tri-Centenary Hall,  on Wednesday, July 19.

A recent commerce graduate of the college, Sakshi Mallya, who cleared the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India exam in her first attempt was felicitated on occasion.

Fr Stany B Lobo, correspondent, Milagres Institutions, blessed the students and  delivering his presidential address said, "Students should set a goal, make it the centre of focus, and work hard towards achieving it. Try to become something in the society. Miracles do happen."

The guest, investiture officer, Dr Norbert Lobo, associate professor of Economics, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, put the robe on the newly elected SWC president Prinsclie Gloria Lewis.

The president administered the oath, pledging the council's sincere service to the college. Lecturers also administered the oath on occasion for the rest of the council.

Dr Nobert, speaking on occasion, said, "It is important to keep oneself busy. The representatives of the council are a bridge between parents, the principal, teachers and students. The discipline and behaviour of students communicates the image of the college. Student must work not for a certain gain alone, but strive towards matching expectations of the task at hand. One must refine his character and demonstrate commitment towards the task, which in turn will surely help achieve something.

"These days, people speak on the lines of caste and religion, but no one upholds humanity. Students should help and understand each other at all times," he added.

"A 'leader' is not just a position, it is an opportunity. Leadership is nothing but the ability to inspire, influence and impact others. One should inspire others by his actions. Good communication skill is prime to clearly express opinions, in a life influenced by media, market and mall.

"In the current era, technology becomes a villain to job seekers. In just a few years' time, nearly 7.5 lac engineers will lose their jobs due to  mechanisation in industries. In 20 to 25 years, nearly 50% of the salaried jobs will witness layoffs. Scope in the Gulf seems dim today. There is a need to inculcate skills in children," he said.

Elaborating on the 5 As that students must follow, Norbert said, "One should appreciate, acknowledge, accommodate or help, and adjust with others, besides abiding by rules."

Other newly elected Students’ Welfare Council members were Suham, third year BCom, as vice president, Srinidhi Kamath, second year BCom, as vice president, Vinitha Crasta D, third year BSc, as general secretary, Niyaz, third year BCA, as joint secretary, Nayana third year BA, as joint secretary, Akhilesh, second year BCom, as sports secretary, Wilma, third year BCom, as sports secretary, and Sushanth third year BCom.
