Jul 20: To all those who forget to carry their identification proof and later face a lot of hassles, UDAI’s ‘mAadhaar app’ is the perfect solution for you.
The app literally enables one to carry their Aadhaar card in their smart phones. Currently available on the Android platform, the app provides an interface to Aadhaar number holders to carry their demographic information, which is, name, date of birth, gender and address along with photograph by linking their Aadhaar number to their smart phones.
However, Aadhaar card data is sensitive and can be misused if the phone gets into wrong hands. To counter this, the app has a biometric authentication. Once you enable the Biometric locking system, the biometric data remains locked till you choose to either unlock it (which is temporary) or disable the locking system.
mAadhaar also has a "Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP)" feature that can be used instead of SMS (short messaging service)-based OTP (one-time password).
If one updates their Aadhaar profile, the updated version after approval will be visible in mAadhaar. One can also share QR code and password protected eKYC data to retrieve accurate demographic information instead of entering data manually.
mAadhaar is launched under a beta version and some of the features will be made available post future updates. It can be downloaded from Google Play Store, but one needs a registered Aadhaar-linked mobile number to use the app. In case one’s mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar, one must visit the nearest Enrolment Centre or do it online through Self Service Update Portal (SSUP).
Though there concerns surrounding Aadhaar and one’s security and invasion of privacy, UIDAI claims that the concerns are baseless as Aadhaar is fully safe and secure. Aadhaar is mandated for Midday Meal, MNREGA, filing ITR returns, etc. and the government is pushing to link Aadhaar to other services and benefits as well.
