Bengaluru: Demand for separate flag not an insult, says CM, lambasts opposition

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday July 19 criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) for quoting non-existent clauses of the Constitution and creating a controversy on the proposed state flag for Karnataka.

"The demand for a separate flag is in no way an insult to the national symbols of India,” he said and asserted that the National flag will always be higher.

“The Constitution has not said anything about having or not having a state flag, so why are the BJP and the JD(S) quoting non-existent clauses?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, BJP blamed Congress for flaring a separatist mindset and asserted that the Constitution does not permit a state flag.

Karnataka BJP spokesperson, S Prakash on Tuesday asked the Congress to not indulge in unnecessary controversies and gimmicks and instead respect the national aspiration.

The Karnataka government constituted a nine-member committee to design the state flag. This move triggered a controversy with the opposition alleging that it will be against national unity and integrity.

Currently, Jammu & Kashmir is the only state permitted to fly its own flag under Article 370 of the Constitution that gives the state special autonomous status.

Nagaland is also in the process of getting its own flag under Article 371 (A) of the Constitution.

According to the Indian Constitution, states are not prohibited from having a separate state flag. However, the state flag must fly at a lower height than the national flag.

We need to remind Mr. Siddaramaiah two important things: 1. Only Jammu & Kashmir have a separate flag among Indian States which enjoys special status under Article 370 of Constitution. No other states including Punjab and Tamilnadu has not ventured in to this misadventure. 2. When BJP mooted this idea few years back in Karnataka, it was this Congress opposed the idea of separate state flag as a issue separatist attitude and as a move against federal principles.

It is true that memory of people are short and selective. But, Mr. Siddaramaiah should not take Kannadiga people for granted. They are also wise as much as himself but remains not reactive for reasons.

Maybe the state and central govt can focus on pressing and real issues affecting the daily lives of people ...instead of silly issues like language ,flag etc.

BJP's hypocrisy on the state flag has come to light. " Contrary to its stand on a separate flag for Karnataka now, the BJP was, in fact, the first to make hoisting of Kannada flags mandatory. While the party is criticising Congress government over its push for two flag policy when in power, it was the BJP that that sought to accord official status to the Karnataka flag. In 2012, then Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda sought to give the maroon and yellow flag an 'official state flag status'. During his budget speech for the year, 2012-13 Gowda made it mandatory to hoist the Kannada flag during Rajyothsava celebrations in all schools, colleges and government offices. "

There is no law which denies a state to have it's own flag.
In United States of America 50 states are having 50 different flags.
In india each and every political party having it's own flag. Fringe groups also having it's own flag. Even sports groups having it's own flag.
BJP always have pain and objection if anything initiated by Congress. There is no one price for Petrol / Diesel
There is alcohol in some states and available in some states.
There is no beef in some states and available in some states.
Ours is One nation with diversities.

Do not compare India with developed countries. India is far behind in infrastructure and employment . First make our country strong and super power so that China dare not flex its muscles at our borders. You talk about diversities which have been created by the 70 years of miss rule and appeasement policies for a vote bank. We have not learned from our 1962 humiliation by China. You talk about culture, India is multi cultural nation. Each and every cultural is going to have flag means we will have hundreds of flag. States like Karnataka and Kerala have different culture in every district and they might demand their own flag and autonomy.
Why we as a developing country need state flags when we have so many problems like farmers committing suicides, shortage of water and electricity ,problem in Jk due to Article 370 ,unemployment, cross border terrorism, and China showing its muscle power at the border. No doubt,Karnataka GDP is better than other states because of IT, that does not mean Karnataka should have better Identity than other parts of India. First we should become super power like US then compare with them in unproductive ,silly issues like having state flags.

It is important to know it from the head of organizations which swears by Hindutva. I would like to draw your attention to the following statement which appeared in the English organ Organizer, again on the eve of Independence:
“The people who have cometo power by the kick of fate may give in our hands the Tricolour but it never [sic] be respected and owned by Hindus. The word three is in itself an evil, and a flag having three colours will certainly produce a very bad psychological effect and is injurious to a
    country.”
Can those who denigrate the National Flag in such foul language be allowed to rule this country?Sa Lay persons like me need to know from practitioners of Hindutva like BJP think of Democracy. I would like to draw your attention to a statement made by second Sarsanghchalak of the RSS and its most prominent ideologue till date, M. S. Golwalkar. As per the RSS archives Golwalkar ji while addressing a group of 1350 top level cadres of the RSS in1940 declared:
“RSS inspired by one flag, one leader and one ideology is lighting the flame of Hindutva in each and every corner of this great land.”
This slogan of one flag, one leader and one ideology was also the battle cry of Fascist and Nazi parties of Europe in the first half of 20th century. What they did to democracy is well-known to this world. Can those who believe in such totalitarian designs be allowed to rule our country?
CM Siddaramaiah may have forget the dark history of India seen under Jan Sangh. The Sangh Parivar which opposed to the India's Tri colour is now once again rejuvenating slogan of 'One flag, one nation' which it fail to recognise by not hoisting in his head office.
Interestingly, BJP which has opposed to Karnataka new flag , has no problem saluting the Jammu and Kashmir state flag for the sake of power.
    Jai Hind

He wants to divide the nation by language and now by flag. Tomorrow he might make separate party by breaking away from main party. Congress high command is not happy with this move. India with multi culture need unity and diversity with development like China and jobs for the people. In future, every district may ask for a separate flag. Since they have different culture.India is united as one country, one flag and one GST. Jai hind

What is wrong in having a state flag? India is not one people, one language, one faith, one culture, one God - Hindi, Hindu & Hindustan. We are Indians of different castes, communities, cultures, Gods, and nationalities. Each state could have its own flag. That would symbolize unity in diversity.

BJP had no respect for the national flag. It is saffron flag all through.

A country is huge and would need one individual flag like India. The others are cities of the country why separate flag is needed. For their personal vendetta they can promote in meetings or social forum. Its yet not time for elections.

There is no provision either in the Constitution or in the Flag Code that prohibits a state from having a separate official flag. A code for a new state flag similar to the National Code will require being passed as a law. If such a code is planned, then it will need the assent of the President. This is because the government will then have to consider the relation of this flag with the national flag.

The state flag is not used in national ceremonies like Republic Day or Independence Day but on occasions like state foundation day.

We have to provide our identity like religion, caste, where we born, place of birth, State, and all stupid things in every field when we apply for education, job, and other requirements. If this practice is abolished, then we do not need State separate flag too.

Kashmir, Nagaland, RSS all having their own flags then why not Karnataka?? We 6 crore Kannadigas are with Mr. Siddaramaiah. We should have separate flag for our state and our State anthem should be made compulsory in all schools, govt offices etc. We like hindi but Central govt & RSS cannot impose hindi on Kannadigas. if they doing so, we will kick out hindi from Karnataka same as Tamilians did.
