Abu Dhabi rises to second place on list of world’s best cities

Abu Dhabi, Jul 17 (Emirates24|7): Abu Dhabi has been named the second-best city in the world to live, work and do business in, overtaking both London and Paris and moving up two places since the last Ipsos City Index.

More than 18,000 people, aged between 16 and 64, in 26 countries worldwide were interviewed for the Index, with New York maintaining the overall world number one spot.

The leading destinations were chosen from an overall list of sixty cities, including major hubs like Sydney, Hong Kong, Cape Town, Moscow, Toronto, and many more.

The results highlight the significant increase in the global perception of Abu Dhabi as a commercial destination, with 21 percent of survey participants listing Abu Dhabi as a top city to do business in, just 2 percent below the leader, New York.

Abu Dhabi ranked highest among participants from the three younger generations – Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z, which were all consistent in placing New York and Abu Dhabi as their top two cities.

Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, TCA Abu Dhabi, said: "The rise of Abu Dhabi in this global ranking is testament to the ongoing efforts to establish the emirate as not only a tourist destination of distinction, but a location that international communities want to work, live and do business in.

It’s distinct popularity among the younger generations highlight the need for global cities to diversify and innovate to sustain their position and strength as business and tourism hubs."

Ghobash continued, "With the ongoing rise of tourism in Abu Dhabi, we are confident that Abu Dhabi’s international reputation will grow from strength to strength as more international visitors experience what the emirate has to offer.

As we leverage the wealth of Abu Dhabi’s cultural heritage sites, such as the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Al Ain, and the forthcoming opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi, we are confident that our position on the map of leading cities will continue to be cemented."

In the period January to May, 2017, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi recorded nearly 2 million hotel guest arrivals, 4 percent growth compared to the same period in 2016.

Domestic visitors accounted for more than 600,000 hotel guests across the emirate’s 167 hotels and hotel apartments in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain Region and Al Dhafra Region.

Adding to Abu Dhabi’s growing international appeal is the recent accolade for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which was ranked by travellers as the world’s no. 2 favourite landmark for the second year in a row by travel planning and booking website, TripAdvisor.

People of UAE and those expatriates working in Abu Dhabi should be proud that it has been listed second in the world's best cities. I worked in Dubai in 1970-80's and have gone to Abu Dhabi on assignment many times and it was beautiful. I visited several times after that with my family, it has changed a lot in many ways.

I like everything in UAE except they have not opened permanent residence permit and citizenship in that nation for those who worked and sacrificed whole of life. I find it very disappointing and disturbing. They have very low population still keep people on work permit but not give them permanent status. Cities prosper with a help of all those immigrants but not grant them status is not good. GCC nations start opening up doors for permanent residence for outsiders to settle and contribute better. Hope my posting will be read by some immigration dept and pass it on to the Royals. I love UAE and happy to settle there if I get a status

If they allow nationality than and during election time not a single representative will be Emarati. Indian, Pakistani, Bengali, sriliankan,Philippines will elect their people on the basis of religion, nationality, language or caste like India....... like in Karnataka the politics played Okkaliga, Kurba or in Bihar, Yadav , Jadav etc.

Stop dragging the core issue here into nationalistic issue just like your BJP gives the patriotic colour when critised for spreading fake news about surgical strikes and taking undue credit for something that never happened. Nation will remain as nation forever and nobody owns it but to change its perspective and maintain its glory depends on the politicians and the administration. If the party comes first before nation then that country is doomed. All its values, resources and wealth will be grabbed by these greedy politicians for thier vested interest leaving the country into a living hell.

Last time I read Mangalore is 6th in global index. Reason being we have unique system of mayor going out and raiding illegal businesses while police are sitting comfortably at the press meet and giving only verbal assurances till one sets DK on fire. Thier only action we can see during Independence Day period and republic day colourful period. During summer when there is scarcity of water we have automatic pipe openings that irrigate the tar road and tests gutters. During rainy season our city becomes virtual swimming pool with rain water, drain and sewage combined coming into our houses and making it Venice of the south. But we have the proud status of being smart city of the world because of smart people spread across the globe from Mangalore and no one wants to see the Mangalore we live in.
